What shall i do Techy people plz(Clutch)

Hi all - right - car into Reno today...

Car needs Head gasket doing so its left in there.. BUT ive a problem getting my car in gear - CANNOT get it into reverse without crunching and tough to generally change gear.. You nice chaps on here suggested the other day that it could be Either: Gear box oil / Stretched Clutch cable / Clutch.

Well - reno told me that it ISNT the gear box oil OR cable BUT the clutch...

Now this COULD be covered under warrenty (Faulty oil seal or something) BUT if its found to be wear and tear then id have to fork out the cost (fair enough)...

They said if its wear and tear then i will have to pay around £750 for a new clutch... I am pretty sure i could get this done cheaper at another independant garage i know of........ BUT...... they said my clutch COULD be covered by warrenty BUT wont know until the clutch is out of the car.. and to get the clutch out of the car is about £500 of labour work!! (7.3hrs @ £74 p/hr)

My car is a 172 cup @ approx 43k miles.. I am still not convinced that it IS the clutch that is going either.. it doesnt slip or anything.. but im not a techy so dont know for sure..

What shall i do?? - if anyone has any ideas, comments, or even places to go and get my problem checked and confirmed AND/OR fixed for cheaper then would be much appreciated...

if it was a faulty seal your clutch would slip, it wouldnt make it hard to get into gear.

i would say gearbox or selector rod or cable.

renault will say that cause once they have it in pieces you have no choice but to pay the money.
 


could be the clutch pressure plate springs loosing their tension , if your prone to sitting with your foot on the pedal (like most ppl are ) the tesion goes out of the springs , it doesnt cause the clutch to slip but makes it hard to engage normaly first & reverse gears, try selecting the gears with the car switched off and see if they go in ok , if they engage ok its not the selector

No, the clutch doesnt slip at all.. the ONLY simptons are hard to get into gear and ALWAYS crunches getting into reverse...

JayGTT: thanks mate.. but how could they say its clutch when its not the clutch but something else?.. they wouldnt replace the gearbox too without telling me would / could they?? :(

Brian182: cheers, well, i started to put the car into reverse BEFORE starting her up so it wouldnt crunch.. went in absolutely fine.. no probs at all.. hope that gives more clues...

Floodie - get another opinion from another dealership - preferrably not a renault main dealer.

k will do... Whats classed as a MAIN dealer though?? this was a "waters renault" which are quite common around here.. ill take it to an independant garage that did quite a bit of work on my old car too...

Do people in general think that from what ive said it is more than likely a new clutch is needed?? my main concern is that the buggers are trying to take me for a ride..... Might take it to GDi.. they arent far from me (stevenage)

they wont replace any parts without asking you first, your gonna get screwed on your warrenty as clutch isnt covered and it ant your oil seal, so get you money out im afraid :)

That would be great Andy if thats possible... although i would like to see GDi.. Maybe ill come and pick it up for a nose when its done if thats ok... When are you free in your diary? only issue is its still in with reno having head gasket work + "strange engine noise" done at the moment...
