Not meaning to rock the boat, but the original 15s (Phase1 or 2) make the car quicker and handle better. By all means, lower the car if you want more grip: you may find that the car tramlines on big wheels and is much more "snappy" at the limit. Id recommend you stick with the 15s for back road supremity.
How do I know? My old 16V came with 16" wheels with 205/45 rubber. All very well at the time, but I swapped to some Phase2s with 195/50/15 rubber and decked the suspension. Much better for feel and control - and the car was without a doubt far quicker.
What you looking at spending? £500-600? For the same money you can get the wheels refurbished and a set of quality coilovers fitted. All the most tuned Valvers run original wheels!
yeap, everything ben said. by the sounds of it you were going for looks if you were considering 17s. i comprimised and went for 16s. i can feel the difference from the 15s.
