But then I always check the car is in neutral before I turn the key. Even if I know it's not in gear, I still do it out of habit.

Couldn't care what other people thought if I tryed starting it in gear, we all make mistakes. I'm more worried about the damage it's do to the ignition system etc.

like rich said, always put your clutch in by default. Its stupid to never leave a car in gear imo, its always a backup

Never leave the car in gear unless I'm parking facing up or down a big incline (obviously reverse for a downhill)
