What speeds should i get in each gear





I dont know if mine is running right,

I get the following in each gear

1st - 30MHP

2nd - 50MHP

3rd - 75MHP

4th - 100MHP

5th - Havernt really gone for it yet

Is this a bit slow or correct?
 


Im not sure, but i think 2nd gear in the Williams is 57mph, and that only goes to 6.5k revs. Maybe its just a speedo problem?
 


I know yours is a valver, but I think all the ratios are the same bar 5th which I beleive is longer in a Williams to make up for the lower rev limit. 2nd gear should be the same between valver and Willy, but the Williams needs to shift earlier due to the lower rev limit.

I get roughly the following:

1st - 30MHP 30mph

2nd - 50MHP 60mph

3rd - 75MHP 85mph (cant remember if its 85 or 90)

4th - 100MHP 110mph

5th - Havernt really gone for it yet 135mph

What size tyres are you running? and at what rpm are you changing?
 


Sounds wrong.

Changing on the red line will give you approx;

1st - 38mph

2nd - 64mph

3rd - 88mph

4th - 115mph

5th - 139mph

I know its hard to gauge, but does it feel like your going as fast as the speedo says. i.e. When you following loads of cars in a 30 zone all doing 30 what does the speedo say?
 


spedo must be right as there is speed cameras in pompey so spedo must be right , ill give it a burn later today , if its still slow what could it be?
 


never really look at my speedo - im more focused on revs when im trying to get a move on. I do know that i get 110mph in 4th. Thats in a 2ltr williams with a HP chip (limiter kicks in at 6750) i swear i could get 115 (in forth) in my valver.

Can any 1 confirm this?
 


in my old valver i was close to 120 in 4th !!

now i get about...

1st - 30mph

2nd - 60mph

3rd - 80-90mph (not sure)

4th - 110-115mph ?

5th - never pushed it enough

im in pompey at the min for uni, my valver is at home tucked up in the garage but if you want to meet up mate and me to take a look, etc im more than willing to (gets me away from this sh*tty work!)

we can then tell if shes running ok!

They got strange ratios - my old mans 1.8 16v Escort was alot faster in each gear but it took alot longer to get there.

Oh yeah - and its an Escort!!

Reckon mines about the same as yours with 17s on.

Must be a bit slow I could do better in 1st and 2nd in my old VTR.

Thats pretty much mine although I swear Im just past 40 when I hit second - 65 in second (weyhey!) 91 in third and ive defo seen 120 in 4th...

And I used to think I got a bad un.... ;)
 


if your running 195/45/15 your speedo should be reading faster than youre actually doing. ive got same size tyres so will check what speeds in each gear are when i manage to get out - damn uni work getting in the way!!

give it a bit of stick mate, should be faster than that.
 


Standard rev limiter is set at 7200RPM

A chip can raise it to 7600RPM

Add some cams, then you can raise it to 8000RPM
 


You say you are changing at 7 or a little below, so Id say you are giving it plenty.

How long have you had the car? Has it always been like this?

If your running 195 45 15s then you are affectivly reducing your gearing which isnt really a bad thing to be honest, but you should still be getting faster than 50 in second. I am looking to run the same size of wheel and tyre on mine come next yeah when the 1/4 m returns.
 


The change in rolling diameter makes a slight change to the gearing but nothing as bad as what your describing e.g. only 50 in 2nd.

with 195/45/15s the speed in each gear on the red line would be approx;

1st - 36mph

2nd - 62mph

3rd - 85mph

4th - 111mph

I went through a really bad week not so long ago - Was so mad at so many things!

The whole week the car got abused - I pretty much hit the limiter in every gear, every change, every day - and I swear by the end of that week it was faster and running better!

Before i blew 1 of the cams in mine, i could hit 100 in 3rd i swear. Bang on the limiter. Limiter was about 7300, not sure as was looking more at the speedo.

Im running on 17s too. I swear something was done to that car i wasnt told about.

The speeds everyones quoting sounds very low to me?

Yep i can definetly fly through 60 in 2nd, I think its just short of 100 in 3rd, over 120 in 4th and on to not sure yet, had it at a indicated 135 could of gone on... sounds dicky to me.

thats with 185/55/15 standard phase 2 wheels and tyres, and i often twang off ther revlimiter never done me any harm, infact i generally always hit it in 1st without fail cos it comes up so quick.

cant see how it can do that. if it revs up and goes through a normal 16v gearbox it should obtain the same speeds as the next one, how long it takes to get there is goverened by the power. I think.
