What supermarkets sell SUL petrol

  Renault Laguna Coupe

Asda & Tesco are down around 76.9 for premium, but I think Sainburys sell a 97 RON SUL. Any other supermarkets do a 97/98 RON fuel?

Rumour is that Sainsburys Super Unleaded is actually BP Ultimate but Im not sure how reliable that info is.

we went through this once b4 (on renaultsport)

quick recap! I saw a petrol truck (BP) filling up sainsburys forecourt.... went over to driver n probed him (yes an anal probe) and he said it was 97 ron (sainsburys super) and he was then on way to bp to fill up their 97 ron (bP ultimate)..... i then wen on to do a search on RON (research octain number) and knock rates etc and found the RON to be directly affected by the area or reigon where the crude oil originated i.e the R)N is not determined by the proces off extraction but the raw materials properties. blah blah blah do i need to go on...? trust me eh!

You can get nectar points at both Sainsburys and BP so they are kind of in the same boat and it wouldnt suprise me if the fuel was the same.

The fuel is the same but each company uses different additives. Being as supermarket fuel is cheaper its anticipated that they use cheaper additives. Additionally some people speculate that supermarkets clean their tanks out less often then Shell etc so you get sediment in your tank which obviously doesnt help performance.

Also if you see a tanker filling a station up carry along to the next one cos the process of filling up a tank causes all that sediment at the bottom to be kicked up and therefore go straight into your tank!

not sure if thats totally true ^^^^^ a lot of smaller franchises do not clean out their tanks more often than say sainsubrys! if at all...... there is no rule book! shell dont own the filling stations just sell the franchise and supply the petrol!

Remember that the petrol tanker isnt just one tank of fuel its segmented up so it can potentially have 2 types of SUL in it, so any proper info to back this up?

??? Whare are you getting premium fuel for 76.9?!!

Im paying 79.9p/litre (if im lucky) for regular unleaded at the moment - Glasgow/Edinburgh area. Im lucky to find fuel under 80p/litre...

79.9p is still what I aim for. Some theiving stations charge 83-84p for the same stuff. When you equate that to 30-40 litres to fill up, several times a month, its quite a saving...

Most high street petrol stations (Esso, BP, Shell) get their fuel from UK refineries. The quality of this fuel is high as the standards set by the UK refineries is high. All this fuel is essentuially THE SAME FROM THE SAME REFINERIES but each supplier will add their own additives. Although no refinery adds enough detergent to protect your valves completely.

Supermarkets buy there fuel from whereever it is cheapest. This often means it comes from outside the UK (although it can come from UK refineries if the prices is right or suplies are short elsewhere) and can be from places like Eastern Europe. Because the quality is not assured to as high a standard as in the UK refineries, the supermnarket fuel can be of lower quality (ie it isnt refined to as stringent a temperature band and as a result has more impurities). Also their is often less emphasis on adding quality additives to reduce price.

RON (research octane number) is actually less important to the motorist than MON (motorist octane number) as RON is measured under low load, but MON is measured under high load (as knocking is more likely to occur under high loads i believe). The octane number at the pump is actaully the AVERAGE of these two figures, not the actaul RON of the fuel. But this is beside the point as the fact remains that if the RON of two fuels are the same they can still differ in quality (ie their refined state).

Ever wondered why people in the middle east like to drive Mercedes? Its because the engines run well on the sh*t fuel. The same sh*t fuel that could go to a supermarket pump in the UK. Common for supermarket filters to have all sorts of sh*t in them INCLUDING SAND. Ok the filter has removed it before it went in your car, but you see what im saying.

If you dont care about your car feel free to use supermarket fuel.

Anyone got a burger, havnt eaten in five minutes?;)

Disagree bout the middle east comment... my sister lives in Dubai and the petrol is 100 RON you dont get any 95 at all I think they just introduced 98! and the reason they nice cars is cos they dont have to pay any tax on anything inc. cars... also it costs my brother in law £9 to fill up his M3 and about £12 to fill up the ML430

Also the tankers are often rubbish and sometimes they put the wrong fuel in the wrong pumps.

My mates a diesel fitter so works on fuel tankers all the time and sees the state of them. My dad used to work for a chemical import and export company on the Thames. Specialised in fuels. He knows where not to get petrol from!

I get mine from Esso 86.9p for 97ron

Sometimes BP goes down a bit but it was over 95p for a while.
