What the ****!!!!

Just driven home, started the 172 up fine, drove 2 mins down the road and the engine went mental!?!? The revs went between 6k and 7k, shift light permanently on!!! What the f***? Turned the ignition off, left it 2 mins, turned back on, drove home fine?
Please help! Has anybody heard of this before??
