What to do with 182 Cup, Track car?

  182
Just wanting opinions on what to do with my 182 cup as im possibly getting a 200 cup.

Cant force myself to sell it and was wanting to try n get a track car sorted. Just feel i might butcher a decent car by stripping it out etc.
Would i be better off with 172 ph1 or just use my 182 cup and square it away?

Cheers

I stripped mine out and it's basically a track car for the road now, few things left to do :)

Strip it fully and have a nice track toy :)

I'd sell it. Too many people talk about having track cars and spend alot of money for one or two track days a year at most. Only worth doing that if you're genuinely going to do a shed load of them. Otherwise flog it for 4k or whatever it's worth and put it toward the 200.

Ph1, better basis for a track car. More coilover options available, already on 15's, cable throttle, already a chunk lighter, and the exhausts cheaper when it falls off. For the money you could sell a standard 182cup for, you could pick up a ph1 172 with plenty of mods already done.

Like mine.

Agreed, PH1 is better.

I do like ph1 172s in flame red, I nearly bought one a few weeks back
Drove it for the 1st time in a week, it's f**king awesome tbf. I've never driven another road car that turns in as well, I'll miss it for sure.

For them reasons, if I was buying again I'd buy a ph1 for a tracked based car.

But if you've already got a good basis for a track car with the 182 stick with it and track that!

This.

The 200 will be an amazing trackcar anyways, id sell it, even if you get 5k for it mate thats a s**t load of money. Plus expect an extra 3k or so to make it a decent trackcar.

Spend 1k on wheels/ r888's for the 200 and think how awesome that will be.

Plus it stops you "noise polluting" :) ;)

I have a Ktec Stealth Supersports now mate! Danny has the Yozza, sounds epic on his car with the charger!! My exhaust is still bedding in but sounds really **** still and is slightly quieter than the Yozza but not much :(

A standard 200 will not be am awesome track car. It will be good, for a road car. But will not compare to a dedicated track car, not even close.

I think id feel better off with the 172 ph1 to track days with, just feel pretty attached to the 182 cup, had it for 6 years now! :S

If you've had it 6 years then you know it's a good one? Unless you can sell yours for top knotch and buy a well priced ph1 you're not gaining alot - why take that risk.

Before you start dicking about with mods to I'd be testing the car standard and see where you think it's lacking. Too many people lose alot of money in this area.

  182
Understand where your coming from, well wasnt planning anything much with engine, just JMS Works, maybe cams. Then try weight lose with interior n maybe bonnet n tailgate. Possible plastic rear windows.

When i more confident or bored can maybe start with more power?

Jamie

You say 'just' JMS engine work but I guess you mean the matched inlets, air filter and a map? That's £500 isn't it? I think that's alot - I honestly would run it standard then think where was it going wrong? Almost guaranteed you'll be getting better brakes then suspension when you can and £500 will deff be a big chunk toward either. The amount of time you can make up by just carrying more speed or dropping it quicker on track is imense. Much more than the small increase in straight line speed you'll get for 10bhp for the £500.

  182
I, thats the one with inlets etc.
Got coilovers on at the moment, and also have the brembo HC with DS2500 pads, could prob go for 4 pots or something.

Weight saving would be a good option?

If you have coilovers I'd go to Mark Fish or someone like that and get them all set up properly with height, stiffness, alignment, camber etc. That is, unless you've already done that?

As for the brakes, have to see how they fair on track more than anything.

Another option is, if you want a dedicated track car could sell the cup for 4-5k (or whatever it's worth) and spend 3k ish on a Clio mk1 track car already set up. Ok, it won't be for everyday use but it will be stripped, very light, 4 pots and expect to have cams most likley. I know Richy was selling his and it was pretty quick with alot of extras - have a look into that too. Only thing with buying track cars is you know they've had a hard life and can expect maybe a few wear and tear items to needed to be replaced.

You could sell your car, get a ph1 with plenty work done to it, and have money left over.

Yeah i know where your coming from, n i wont mind stripping the interior seeing as it would be older.
Not really up for buying a second hand track car, rather have done stuff myself so kind of know whats been done and by who!

Lol, yes it will.

Unless he plans on doing a few trackdays a month, it will be epic fun.

Rubbish. It's a road car, on road car suspension. A proper track car won't be much use on road, but a different league on track. Ask Matt how quickly that pesky 172 disappeared from the 200 on track.

You seem to have missed the bit where he's talking about a 'track car'. A 200 will be a better allrounder, but not a better track car.

Lol not rubbish, ive owned a dedicated track car, and yes, it was far quicker than r26's on track, and an awesome experience. As fun as it was standard though... possibly not. Hence why you're getting bored with yours and looking for something Rwd.

I cant see its worth the outlay when you already own a 200, which in itself makes a mighty fine track car. Maybe if your first car was a large diesel saloon, but what im saying is a 200 cup is in itself an epic car for both track and road, why spend 10k on something for a few days a year when you already own that.

You seem to have missed the bit where he asks what to do with his 182, my point is sell it, as the 200 is a great track tool as it is.

Anyways, will leave you to your track car high horse tangent bud ;)

Mine's vastly more fun than standard, but it's still FWD. That's the reason for changing.

But he also feels he might butcher a decent car by stripping it out.

Looking for a track car? Hmm me dont think so.

Is he aware how good the 200 is on track? Or is he echoing what he's read on a forum, and because its a road car, its rubbish... You cant use it on track until you've spent 5k+ on it.

But thanks for the attitude.

Iirc you waded in with high horses? Save that attitude for the day job.
Oh look, another edit.

Was wanting to try stay away from using my daily as a track car, but i guess 200 cup was meant to be used on track sometimes.
Just worried that it might cos probs with the car for daily use, but i guess loads of people do the same thing and still manage to use it as a daily.

Appreciate everyones opinions

From experience, it will cost you mega bucks to make the 182 into a track car far removed enough from the road car to make it worthwhile.

With that money, you could buy another set of wheels or two, and get the 200 serviced after each trackday and still be in pocket.

Its what it was designed to do after all, should be fine!

How many track days you planning on doing a year?

Its your choice at end of the day :)

Im turning mine into a track car, just had ASTS set up for track put on last week, stripped interior etc.....still perfectly usable as an everyday car to me.

Depends what you're after fella. If funds allow, a dedicated track setup will be miles ahead. Also depends how much you rely on the daily driver. I've probably been without mine for 4 weeks over a 18month period due to issues on track. There's also the issue of warranty with a new car, and insurance costs on a pricey car for track days.
