What turns on the heating of the washer jets?

I've noticed on frosty mornings that the ice melts around my washer jets on the bonnet while I'm de-icing the car. This is with engine cold, heaters on full, fan on full to windscreen and heated rear window on.

Anyone know what turns these heaters on? I can't figure it out and my washers keep freezing while I'm driving along.

Thanks

does happen with the mirrors, i'll notice sometimes that when the heaters are on full whack in the mornings that the mirrors will defrost quickly.

Could this not be because the bonnet has 2 holes where the jets come through - thus heat from the engine getting to the nozzles quicker. i can promise you they're not heated by anything other than the engine.

As above. Your washers shouldnt freeze while going along. I take it your using screen wash fluid plus water and not just water??

I doubt the washers would freeze whilst going along - the water in the bottle is just frozon solid. Whn i have JUST water in mine the 11 mile journey to work won't thaw them. When i get back after work they are just fine.

They weren't frozen when I started my journey at -3 but 45 miles later they froze up. Plenty of fluid left and it there is no way it should freeze as I have a winter mix of screen wash in.

I'm surprised it is the engine that heats the nozzles, it happens too quickly in the morning for it to be that. I'll have to remove the sound proofing and have a look. Get my volt meter out to and flick a few switches to see what controls them - if there is anything there lol.

would have thought they would be heated really, even my old rover 214 had heated washer jets, dont think the 172 has them though - certainly no wires running to them

Never even heard of this - i would think it would be pointless. the water would just freeze in the lines. Just buy some any freeze you pikeys :p

Ice forms most easily on exposed surfaces (you might find ice on top of your bonnet but unlikely under it) so heated washer jets a useful as it's generally always the nozzle that freezes and the lines are fine (that's in normal icey conditions, -10 or colder figures can freeze up evertyhitn thoguh as you found if it's doesn't have much screenwash!). However, I don't think the Clios are heated but they are on my BMW.

Yeah it would need to be much colder for a longer period of time to freeze the lines than it would to just get surface freezing in the nozzles, they were bloody useful on the 214 tbh
