whats going on with all the crashed cups

  Clio 197

I dont want to judge anyone, or make assumptions... this is just my opinion:

Its quite easy to have a lot of fun in the summer, and get away with murder on the roads... (especially in a Cup)...

Come winter, you think youre driving sensibly (because youre used to driving a lot quicker), your tyres are bald, the road slippery and no ABS...

Then... Crunch! :(

  Audi RS4

toyos are pretty average when its greasy tho imo,had them ever since my first tyre replacement and although they are good in the wet I,ve had a few moments in winter season!

  Fiesta ST Stage 3

Good in the wet ??? take it so easy in the wet its un true . Gr8 in the dry but dont want to push them in the wet.

  Fiat Coupe 20v turbo

I think your missing the ;) there Mike, the Toyos are renowned for being a bit crap in the wet!

Just buy some Toyos tyres you will never drive to fast in the wet ;)
agreed

worst tyres ive used in the wet were the Toyo Proxes T1-S

Why do people think theres some magic tyre that offers huge grip in the wet? Wet = massivley reduced grip no matter what the rubber.

Sorry, but these recent crunches seem to be invariably caused by human error, not the tyres, not the weather.

Puts on flame-proof jacket.

Cups is more due to lack of ABS

Happened last year too on here, loads in a few weeks of each other.

I have Toyos on my Super Ls and there fine as long as you drive correctly. I push it everywhere and have not *touches wood* had any scares yet.

bet there not as bad as the hankang widowmakers that you can get from kwik-fit, had some fitted to my megane and the buggers would lose grip if you spat on them

The lack of ABS is a factor, driver error is the cause. Not trying to sound like a tw*t, but its true. Ive had my share of mishaps, but Ive never thought the cause was anything else other than my own mis-judgement of the conditions.

I dont understand why you all keep going on about ABS, its cant perform miracles. When I first started driving ABS wasnt around and I never found it a problem and now it is I rarely notice its there as its only there for emergencies which so far I have been lucky enough to avoid. Its not even kicked in on track days and the tyres have been right on the limits of adhesion then.

Shut-up then, in all your posts you sound like a tw*t;)

I have driven a Cup in the wet and in general the car feels more on edge.

The Sport Clios are reasonably aggressively set up compared to other hot hatches, it is not suprising some people have come unstuck. In dry weather the car does all the work, in the wet some questions are asked of the driver..and perhaps some cant answer them!

Thats right Lee, i have hardly needed my ABS, but i will be glad when i do need it that i have got it, unlike these CUPS that have no hope. If Si had of had ABS he may of stopped because his was a slow impact.

Charming.

Lack of ABS isnt the cause of an accident. If you need the ABS then youve mis-judged the situation. Though obviously it can be a life saver when that *does* happen...as it can to all of us.

By the sounds of how Sis accident happened I would expect ABS to have allowed him to be able to steer enough to have avoided the car. Thats the biggest benefit of it, it wont stop you quicker, just allow for some control of the car.

Its a case of having a powerful car, big fat efficent brakes, no ABS, and a complete lack of experience ort knolegde of how to use them.

BAsically it comnes donw to driving too fast in the wrong conditions end of, the stiffer suspension wont help atall.

How many mk1s do you see written off wihtout ABS....virtually none!! Coudl be be becasue the mk1 owners in genberal are more enthusiastic car owners and are more interested int he raw driving experience wiht the barest of technology? all IMO ofc

Yeah sorry got about halfway down and got bored reading all the replies so skipped to the end and posted my own opinion

some fair points but its probably more down to too much power overconfidence and not enough skill. im not saying im great cos i have had my moments i have just been lucky.

simple rule of thumb: if its wet dont drive like a c*nt.

Loonys top tip is that toyo proxies T1-S although offering awesome grip in the dry, suck vast quantities of c**k in the wet and you explore their ability in anything other than bone dry conditions at your peril.

Exactly the same thing last winter. Coinciding with a spate of wet/icy weather were a spate of binned cups. There were like 4 in a week or something.

My work mate binned his Cup on the ice.... said he was inside the speed limit (50 iirc) and driving steadily when he lost the back end on some ice. Several people must have gone over the same ice patch as him that moening, yet he was the only one to crash. lol.

lol.... mate the first two paragraphs are spot on but the last one is utter b****cks. I wonder how many mk1s have already been crashed?? You cant base facts on figures on what you see on here..... there could have been 50 mk1s written off yesterday that we didnt get to hear about. Most (not all) mk1 drivers drive old clios because they cant afford a newer one (Theres no shame in that btw) and would take a new shape Clio over an old any day..

lol.... thats what we said..... its like people who have crashed in a little back lane somewhere..... they see the National speed limit sign and think its OK to drive at 60 cos the sign says so. lol.

I have an interesting theory that might explain this

Most Cup drivers thing that they are good drivers/invincible. Drive the car fast as such take it above the limit.

It has nothing to do with the car/abs .... IT IS THE DRIVER. TOO MUCH CONFIDENCE/ NO EXPERIENCE (tested with these conditions) ;)
