whats the best way to hit 190-200bhp?

  182 trophy
as above.. car is a 172 cup. have thought of the usual like cams or itb's, but was wondering if any1 has tried using the engine out of 197/200? would that be worth while trying? or would it just be a waste of time and money? :S

Buy a PH-1 172? ;)

Depending how good the engine is... The power output can differ quite considerably!

2.5" exhaust
de-cat
Matchled inlets
catcams, C&B, Schrick etc.
remap

Should you you 190bhp +

But alot of money, for not alot of gain :(

I think the engine would have to already be a strong one to make those figures, as your aware they are notoriously hard engines to extract extra bhp from

was wanting to try getting cat cams in mine next year as it seems to be the cheapest option. with a bit of luck that might touch the 190...

Throttle bodies for best power and torque without going forced induction. Extra man points and a big grin as standard

mild cams and matched inlets with a custom map if you dont want to change the ECU

Wild cams, matched inlets and standalone for a manly idle and a big grin

Just man up Liam and jump on the turbo band wagon. I have a few ideas that should put low pressure turbo conversions very close to supercharger kits.

With a bit of carefull spending it should be easily cheaper than an ITB kit, a further bonus is I'm also local so could give you a hand and some tech support should you need it

That's a good offer from Steve. Can I have some tech support too?;)

It depends entirely on your project goals and your ability to maintain the car. You must also consider long term user issues such as reliability, running costs, durability etc.

ITBs sound great, but are high maintenance and extremely difficult to setup and map properly. Every company under the sun will have a crack at fitting them to the clios, however I can think of a list of cars as long as my arm that have issues with balancing / ECUs / mapping / Disgusting loom work / MPG / Cr@p output (even less than standard in some cases) / even cr@pper cold starts /

Cams are a good option, however they don't have the added value of appearance and a cracking intake sound that an intake / ITB type product will provide. They do however provide a good base for intake related work at a later date which will provide a true 200 pony output.

Supercharger kits are proving extremely unreliable, spinning the crank pulley, killing aux belts etc.

Or just keep it near stock, resist the NEED for 190 bhp; port the inlets, nice zorst, decent filtration, good map aiming for a good 178bhp & 155ft/lbs, good brakes, a good quality set of coilovers and some trackdays away we go!

No comment on your own product Tom? lol

p.s. hopefully be coming to you for a RS2 before May next year :)

Well a well mapped ITB setup should be superior. My last car, a 205 mi16 could get better mpg when driving normally and started without issue every day. A good mapper will sort aspects such as cold starts and part throttle. Obviously theres a lot of scope for bodging and failing to do things properly when fitting too.
Cams are great for power but in these times fuel consumption should be considered. The sound when running through ITB's is special though :D

Cool :). I'm not commenting in here to flog my wears, just to share my experiences.

If you ever reply to my PM you can have as much tech support as you want ;)

I'm working on it, I need some data off you actually to finish some simulation work I have been playing with in the evenings.

That sounds good to me. Will have to get saving for a while first though... what sort of power would you be expecting from that? about 240 maybe?

You still considering selling up John?!
on an off at the moment matey, its now all depending on work as i might have to do alot more traveling soon.
Ive had 3 seperate runs on rolling roads with my car, first was 197bhp, 202bhp then 205bhp.

Its not just about the numbers for me, the car pulls alot better, the sound is amazing, mpg aint so bad at 52mpg when im doing a steady 70-80mph on long runs.
Yea topping up the oil and other checks with balancing can be annoying for people, then any modification on any car will cause some thing to happen.

Strip the b****cks off it and get your power:weight to 190hp ;) Miles easier and cheaper.

But if you do go for ITBS make sure the map is half decent, s**t/poo "whatever" maps make baby jesus cry.

From experience dont go the cam route unless its to compliment. By the time youve lashed out for inlets, exhaust, IK's remaps and other strap on's to go alone with them you'll be in ITB or jms inlet money which does get you in the zone your after

stripping is free power ;)

My ph-1 172 was 188bhp and 880kg.. Weight makes by far the biggest difference to the overall characteristics of the car!

stripping makes people sell cars becuase they dont like them anymore ;) and makes the car worth less to buyers, and reduces the number of people who'll be interested in the first place

True. Been there done that, got sick of the hassle and moved back to full interiors for road cars. I now look at lighter components without compromising comfort.

Your just not hardcore enough danny...

Saying that mines still has an interior for now, and then in spring I'll get a bike again :)
