You know my thoughts:

I have a cat C atm and previously had a cat D.

I would advise insuring the airbags were not deployed. It is unlikely they will be working again if they had as it costs so much to replace. My car at the moment had been in an accident so the airbags deployed having said that, but I have bucket seats and harnesses so I am not too bothered. I also picked the cart up for between 500-700 quid less because of this.

The thing you have to think about is resale values. E.g. try and avoid crinkles in the roof and obvious signs of damage.

IMO you should look to pay around 35% less for a categoried car.

well sam i see your point i had the same prob with mylast car it was a 2001 and had 60.000m i paid well below average (2000) but when i crashed it not a single airbag went of i hit the wheel and my nose tuck all the blow (poor thing) but the car im looking at is a 2002 extreme with 25000 miles and he only wants 2000 maybe even be able to go lower but it is a catagory insurance loss.

what u think ?

There's a couple of good auction places near you mate, one's at Tewkesbury and the other is near Dursley/Cam sort of way (just go south on the A38 ;))

my old dynamique was blatently a catagory of some sort, when i bought the car it came without the billabong decals so asked the question, and got a reponse of no sir its neevr been crashed. Anyway the old owner came in work as he noticed the car outside and was told it was crashed on a main duel carriage way at high speed and had about 3k's worth of damage

^ 3ks worth of damage on a new 1.2 16v (less than a year old) would be normally repaired. Its only 33% of value. That would not cause it to be catagorised.

Sorry, my mistake Gumby is correct.

The law states if asked directly the seller must admit it (if he knows himself) that the car is a category write off.

However:

A/ How does one proove the seller knows?
B/ How does one proove the direct question was asked?

Tbh I think alot of small cars out there are Categoried. Alot of airbag systems don't work (this can often happen on normal not categorised cars if they have just hit a curb at speed, but not enough damage to write off) but the sellers just cover up the SERV and airbag lights on the dash.

Tbh I think it is a risk worth taking and I am in two minds whether or not it is fair to not admit the category status if asked. I am certainly going to tell them about the airbags however as I think this is a safety issue.

Sam you have to (and should morally) tell them its catagorised....

Ive had a listed car in the past. Thats a choice i make, its not for everyone (even though there is a lot rubbish posted about listed cars).

Tbh I probably will in this instance Ad, but in many cases, low value cars like clios can get written off for such minor things I don't think its an issue.

well ive looked at an older car y2001 but its got fsh and only 64000 not bad he wants lowest of 2400 without tax so im gona look at it im getting pissed about waiting and i also want one so i cvan swap asll the moded parts over before the insurance take it away

  Breaking A 172 Replica
Is that categoried?

If so I am suprised it has FSH!

What colour?

I would say 2300 if Cat D and 2000 if cat C. Deffo no more.

Sam

a) Reasonable enquiries - probably would extend to a HPI check. Ignorance isn't an excuse iirc lol
b) I don't think it even has to be a direct question. I would also help their cause if it was one of their principal criteria when purchasing a car. eg. they want a red, undamaged car

Could be wrong, but this is what I remember from work last summer lol

harder to insure and sell

Don't think cat c/d are harder to insure from my experience?

tesco are funny about it...

cat C and D cars can prove good value.. there is a williams thats CAT C on a salvage site at the moment... Cat C. Looks like someone has reversed into it and just managed to dent the bonnet in.... but becomes cat C due to its relative value and age... so when people say CAT C's specifically is significant damage its not always true as its relative to the value of the car...... Depends on the type of vehicle how much it will be worth... you would sell a saxo VTR on a cat d/c very easily in comparison to a volvo for example because of the type of market... a young lad just wants the best model for the least money wether the repairs are shoddy/dangerous.... A lot depends imo on the standard of repair... i know when i buy my salvage the only real work i do it bolt on stuff.. i leave any welding etc to my bodyshop so i can garantee the quality.

  mk4 golf gttdi180
cat d is light panel damage and cat c is suspeionsion and things like sills etc so its better buy a catd isnt it? for value and future selling

i bought one and its spot on for the amount of money you save as long as you can check the workmanship and know what your looking for i dont see the problem. infact if all the damage is superficial / cosmetic they can be like new so whats the problem. my car was book value 5.5k and i paid 4.0k had for a year with not a single problem. i simply couldnt afford one otherwise :rasp:
