Wheel refurb query (maybe fred will know)

  172 cup TT
Hi all - Wanting to refurb my turini's - going to go for ford graphite grey...

After reading the guide on here it seems (especially with all the bloody spokes) that its going to be a right chore!.. I'll give it a go none the less but my MAIN concern is that they were already made very dark by our resident Fred a few years ago - think powder coated... Will I need to get rid of ALL this powder coating first or just cut into it so the primer has a layer to stick too?.. Getting rid of all of it back to a silver looking wheel would, I think, take farrr too long.. would rather spend the cash getting Fred or someone else do them again... I'm not bothered with hard work, I actually like farting around with stuff like this but concerned that it might just be too much a job for the time I have right now :(

No need to get it back to silver in the slightest mate, if you're that worried about them coming out dark, go for a white primer, personally I'd just key them back, remove any imperfections and go with grey primer, which will soon hide any trace of the darker colour, I'd then just spray as normal.

gotcha mate - So key back using something like 240 grade wet/dry, then 1200 grade, then a light grey primer and on as normal from there?

Phew sounds much better..

All depends how bad the damage is mate? Kerbed to f**k? Or perfect? Basically, you don't need to use anything below 800 if there is no damage, the grade of paper you start at just depends how bad the damage is, you could sand down 90% of the wheel just with 800, but one fucked bit, start at 240, then 600, then 1200 or whatever.

cool - well they arent fcuked at all, far from it... just have a few marks here and there.... cheers.. think ill do two passes, a 600, then a 1200?.. that sound alright? - i may do a bit of filling too if that changes things...

Yeah sounds alright, although you may want a quick pass of 800 inbetween, I'd only use the 600 on the roughest bits, so 600 on the rough bits, all over with 800 (to blend the rough bits in) then 1200.

Sounds like a plan.. i'll stick to that and pop the results up on my build thread soon... thanks mate

No troubles, any problems/questions, just ask.

I'm no pro, but I've DIY'd a few sets, I just can't seem to stop the lacquer from making it look darker than it is, but that's another story.

Another question for you is it possible to get the smooth glossy feel from rattle cans? I fancy painting my F1s in anthracite, but I've done a few small bits but although they look good they don't really feel like they do when sprayed by a pro

That's where my trouble lies tbh, I can achieve a really nice finish, but always end up with a darker colour that I hope for. Getting the glossy finish is about doing brilliant prep and getting the lacquer right.

Unfortunately I seem to hit a catch 22:

Thin layer of lacquer, colour looks great, finish looks orange peel (although I've never let it dry to see how it turns out)

Thick layer of lacuqer, excellent finish, really smooth and deep looking, but the colour underneath is darker than it should be.

I know, but then how do you avoid it looking orange peely? Or does that just dry away????

I just seem to get a much smoother finish when I go a bit thicker on the lacquer.

wheels need putting in a shot blasting cabinet using a little aluminum oxide clean a wheel for painting in about 5 mins

I do about 3-4 thin coats. When it starts to dry/go tacky, layer another on. ALways come out alright.

As Canary said, thin coat of laquer then wait until it starts to go tacky... then another... then another.... then another.... then leave for 48hours minimum.

Don't be fooled into thinking that because it feels dry, it is dry. Laquer needs to harden properly or it'll last 5 mins.

do many places offer this? as 20 mins to do all 4 wheels would be an appealing lazy way of getting the wheels cleaned up..

lots of places can do this just need to find someone with a blast cabinet. I work for a shotblasting company but only sell them not actually doing it. put in yellow pages shot blasting. Shouldnt cost you alot and will get a better profile and much better for painting. If you have no luck by monday ill look at my customer list and find someone close to you.

thanks harey.. had a quick look and nearest is newbury... if you know any closer near crowthorne / bracknell then give me a shout, might consider it... but do also kinda like the challenge of sanding them myself.. hmm

ill ring round on monday see if I can get some before and after pictures so you can see the quality

Not worth the heart ache imo! Been there done it. For £200 there abouts get them re powdercoated, Done by hand they will NEVER look as good as a professional job

I did mine Ford Graphite grey a few months ago and D.I.Y too. Got the odd chip in the wheels but nothing that's noticeable. Prepping the wheels is a pain in the arse but the actual spraying is a doddle.

Cheers harey - And yeh i know what you mean Gaz, im in 2 minds, but with the amount ive spent on my car recently £200s a fair bit, but £40 and a bit of elbow grease seems much better....

Looks good that Jon - the colour i was considering too
