wheels - what size? lowered?

hi guys, sorry but this has probabaly been asked a million times before.

whats the biggest wheel size you can fit on a 16 valve mk2 without messing with the arches, also if 17's are fitted what can it be dropped by and the same for 16's

please can people put some pics up of either mk 1 or mk 2 16v's with 16's or 17's
