when can i thrash it?

  monaco 172
I know a cold engine shoulnt be ragged. My journey to work is about a mile and half and the needle has only just got up to its just over half way position when i enter the car park meaning i cant have any fun with it lol.

Is there a minimum "safe" temperature or am i just going to have to take a longer route to work to have a bit of fun with it?

lol just drive sensibly lol i kno its hard i have the same problem while driving mine to work i tend to let the engine tick over for a wee bit b4 i head to work a couple of minutes will do the trick

  Maybe a 172 Cup..
Got to say driving a mile and half is a bit pish mate. My journey to work is about 5 miles, about 2 1/2 miles to dual carriageway. I never go above about 3k rpm till I'm at least there and that is letting it tick over for a bit before setting off. Coming home once I get to end of dual I stick to under 3k again. Or if I don't I'll let car tick over on drive for a minute or two before switching off. I think some o this comes from last 2 cars before Clio been turbo'd though tbh...

ko actually, its more like 2.5 mile, i was wrong but.. anyway still same question. Is it ok to give it some beans after say driving a mile or so?

2.5 miles and you drive. oh my god.....

id never give it beans afta a mile. I usually go about 5 miles before I get to the main A road, then will change it @ 4500 a few times before going into the red:approve:

TBH how often do you actually hear of an engine breaking from being driven hard from cold?

good point, but i spent alot of my money an its gota last me at least 3 years so dont wana break it lol.

Kev, thats a good point, but to be honest the cold rev limiter is a bit close to the warm anyway so bit pointless.

Never.

You hear of things failing in later life, but whether it's down to ragging from cold, no one will ever know.

Out of interest, how many people have blown engines here? or known of one go? if so, what breaks? soz for the thread rape...

Does the engine not get all coked/sooted up from not reaching operating temperature over and over again?

Heard of loads of depahser pully/tensioner/belt failure. Not much else though.

Most F4Rs die of failed cambelt. When I say most though, it's not a common thing. Having said that, the cars aren't old enough yet to start showing up "common" problems that develop later in life.

I always thought short journeys were what killed engines. Would the short journeys lead to head gasket failure later on in its life. This is only my opinion.

My journey to work is only 2 miles and I manage to get it to warm up just as I'm getting to work, just accelerate slowly but let the revs get to around 3k in my opinion before changing gear

I had a Fiesta Zetec-S (mk5) as my first car. Bought it with something like 25k on it. By the time I'd got to 30k the piston rings had gone. I put it down to me nailing it from cold constantly to impress girls at college.

Ragging it from cold will increase the wear on the engine as the oil isn't able to do it's job properly until it gets to a certain temperature.

I don't rag mine until I can see that the oil has got into it's optimum temperature range, oil gauges as standard on a Mk1 ftw ;)

I live 0.7 miles away from work, sadly perhaps?

I still drive. Sod finishing work in the early hours and walking home freezing, amongst the drunks walking back from town.

Let the oil warm up and run at the viscosity its meant to run at, I know it needs to be warm enough to lubricate all the moving parts, your water temp will be up to normal operating temp well before your oil is, give it 10-15 mins before you rag it, that doesnt mean 10-15 mins on the drive, the engine actually needs to be moving and revving to get all parts up to operating temperature

This is the same for the gearbox and oil as well so dont go crazy,

If I were you i'd cycle to work

In my old 306 rally it took about 10mins to get up to temp. So I wait ten mins.
