When to stop spending, cam belt change 182

Only had my little 182 a week, love the car, its an 04 plate and done 43k from new.
I bought the car knowing it needed a cam belt and two front tyres and paid accordingly for the car, thought about £500 would cover it.
Now ive looked into things im wondering what to do,

cambelt change, no worries but then dephaser pulley or whatever it is, do i do it at the same time or should i leave it? thing is i know if it starts rattling later down the line the cam belt will have to be changed again agghhh. getting expensive, also while its apart do i change the waterpump, well i supose i should, now im looking at around £650 plus the oil change it needs and the two tyres.

Sold my subaru to avoid more expense but it seems i cant avoid the above.
I know its a one off but damn :S

For the sake of £120 (or whatever a dephaser pulley costs), I'd get it done now. Unfortunately when my cam kit was done, I didn't even know what a dephaser pulley was, let alone the fact that a mere 6 weeks later it would cost me nearly £400 to replace it. I wish I'd been told about them sooner and saved myself around £300.

They are not costs specific to Clios though... TBH you could have got any new car and still had the same costs.

My Advice is to speak to the Traders on here (Depending on where you are) about costs - Try JMS / 519 / BTM for the cam belt. Personally would have the Dephaser done as you said, if at a later time it becomes noisey you only have to have the belts done again!
 
I bought my 172 needing a belt change but luckily as I was a member on here I knew the costs. I had the dephaser changed too for peace of mind because as others have said, you do not want to end up replacing it later anyway.

Just didnt plan on having to pay out so much, if a job needs doing i to tend to have it done once so i can drive the car without worring about it.
I only know about the dephaser pulley through this site or i would have just done the cambelt like on any other car ive owned and like stated i guess i should just pay now so i dont have to worry about it later, bloody cars.

The dephaser is £171.11. I normally agree to change it for a nominal labour charge on top of the part if it becomes a problem within 6 months of a cambelt change.

with 43k on the clock, unless the oil has never been changed on time, I'd be stunned if it became an issue

In my opinion I'm totally with Danny, I would get the belts done and not worry about the dephaser. It really shouldn't be an issue, I've seen plenty of 1*2's that have gone over 100k on the original part. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it shouldn't damage anything else when it goes either, so deal with it when the time arrives, if indeed it does during your ownership.

Jimbo, if neglected it *could*, in theory, damage your inlet valves but normally it just makes your car rattle and sound like a diesel... it can also cause 'missfiring' symptoms in cases whilst under load. Any decent 'Specialist' should inspect it at the time though and at least inform you of the potential pitfall at the time of quoting (If they know what they're on with of course)

As above, Danny's policy at 519 is more than fair as they don't always require changing at the time of changing the timing belt (eg. there's no movement observed in the assembly). I prefer to always price to include the dephaser and make the customer aware of this and the reasons behind it. There's nothing worse than going out to a job and finding the vehicle needs one. Customers are always happy if you can save them £153 (thats my retail on a genuine dephaser unit) but you tell them the job can't be finished and they need to spend and additional £153 that they didn't plan for or just simply don't have and you can watch their day go from good to bad in an instant and they always shoot the messenger like its my fault.
