Which anti-virus?

I've got McAfee internet security suite 06 on my Dell and I think it's time to change. It seems unecessarily 'large' and has got loads of s**t on there I don't even need. Only thing is I'm a bit worried because I've never had a virus, trojan, worm etc with McAfee on it since I've had the pc (last June)

What can I download for free that'll be as good and be barely noticeable size wize on my machine?

I've heard of Avast but have no idea if it's any good.

Used to use AVG but it didn't remove the virus just told you it was present, I now use Avast and really like it.

pmurray - Trend is awesome but surely you can't get it free? and it's not the smallest in terms of memory usage.

ben - Where did you download Avast from? I'm split between AVG and Avast but you've moved onto Avast so I'm guessing it's better? :S

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html - You have to register but it's not a big deal. One of things I like is that it must update at least once a day.

Ive just changed from AVG to Avast4, as AVG wasnt performing as well...also just installed Outpost Pro Firewall.
