Toughy mate, i'm a big fan of the trophy but i've had a love of an albi blue 197 for so long now!

If it had to be a cup, in GW black speedlines! Mint!

Cooper if you like your comforts and maybe longer drives?

wont be doing long drivers, just to enjoy myself, would be a cooper s works.
if i had a 197cup would be white with black speedlines.

but then my payments will be alot more getting a 197 over a trophy.

Test drove all bar the trophy and imo the 197 cup is better then the cooper s, i just found the cooper s felt slow and boring. But maybe i test drove it after having he cup for so long that i just needed a bigger step up hence the Vee. But let me put it like this, test drove an S3, cooper s and works, clio 200, scirocco, golf gti and none of that lot tempted me to change- it took something very special to do that.

well i have found a mint 182 racing blue, coilovers..etc..so i think im gonna go with that. i have driver a 182 and a 197, 197feels more solid and maybe handles better, but 182 is alot cheaper and is still awesome!

When you say mint, it is the best one on here ;) You may have a competitor if I decide on a Clio again.

I haven't driven a cooper S but my opinion on the 182/197 is this, if you want a well built everyday car that handles fantasically and you can drive fast when the moode takes you get the 197. If you want a weekend car thats purely for fun buy the 182.

197's handle & brake better, 182's accelerate better and feel more fun. As always this is just my opinion from owning one of each :)

I drove a Cooper S and think that the handling is too good. It does what it's told without any complaint = boring. The car feels very slow compared to a 182/197, and the big negative for me is that there are too many on the road.

Agree with the others though, you need to drive them all yourself.

tough decision there buddy...

Only point i will make is there is quite a big difference between the standard cooper s and the cooper s works!

The works version is rapid and having been in one many times i think its awesome.

Havent been in a 197 tho so i dont have a comparison for you. Both cars are good though

think its gonna be the 182, if he sells it to me. lol.
cant justify spending over twice as much for a nice 197.
coopers are too common also.

  RB 182 cup
There is no 'worse' car. Its up to personal preference. I test drove both but the 182 did it for me

  RB 182 cup
oh sorry...i believe the 197 is worse on mpg.

I certainly see mid 30's MPG wise on the 182... but IIRC its low 30's, sometimes even late 20's in the 197's

the 197 is definately worse on fuel, we average 33mpg in the 182, if we take it easy we can get high 30's low 40's. The 197 averages around 25mpg, 30-32 if we drive like a granny.
They are both awesome cars and I wouldn't say either was better than the other (bar fuel of course)

Fuel economy is the only real difference between a 182 and 197

There is a very big difference between the 197 & 182, especially when it comes to driving them, we love them both though:)

I think to put this into context my vee manages 26MPG- bearing in mind i am putting it through its paces as i have only had it a week, just shows how poor the 197 is on fuel but i am glad for the year i spent owning one and the way it held its value sure made getting the vee easier.

I know the newer gear boxes get better economy and as the 197 is gettin more miles on it economy is getting slightly better (our 197 still only has 13K on the clock). Its still bad though lol.

Tbh my 197, which had one of the newer gear boxes got stuck at 29.9, could get it to 32MPG but got bored.
As for the OP question i would go for the 182 or 197- if you want more extreme fun then 182 for you, test drove both a cooper s and works and didn't like either- bang for buck the clios hammer it all day long.

I had my VX220turbo at 19. Exige at 20..

If it's just a toy doing limited mileage insurance won't be too bad.

The clio's, as good as they are, are not really a weekend toy IMO..

Or maybe a mk1 V6?

  clio trophy No56
I have a Trophy, my mate has a R27, which is basically a 197cup.
I would pick the Trophy, even though i do love the R27 / 197cup.
My mate who has the R27 said he would love a 172cup or a Trophy as a second car.
I havent driven a copper s but i have came up against a few and i dont rate them speed wise or looks wise, although the Works is slightly better.

Trophy = Get one they are awsome, and save some cash.
R27 / 197cup = If you can afford it then go for it.
Copper s = Dont bother, you will keep seeing a Trophy or R27 / 197cup and wish you had got one.

yer. what did you do for a job then to have a vx220 turbo at 19?

surely the service costs..etc for the vx220 and lotus will be miles more than a 182?
