Which new hot Clio

  Yaris Hybrid

I have owned a Mk2 and Mk3 Clio 1.2 16v Clio Sport in the past. I currently drive a Vectra but now I can afford to buy the Clio I wanted to buy in the first place!

Trouble is I had my heart set on the 172 Cup and then all of a sudden Renault come up with the 182. The 182 is fine but I prefer the old 172 Cup as it was a lot cheaper and in many ways quicker. Ive driven the Clio Cup touring car and want something as close to that track car as possible. Frankly I wish they hadnt saddled the 182 with all those pointless luxury items that they originally stripped from the Cup to save weight and improve the performance and handling.

I have just been on Autobytel and they still have the old 172 Cup advertised! Is that genuine? Can you really still buy them brand new?

Ideally I would like to see a stripped out 182 Cup? Perhaps Renault will be knocking up something like as a final farewell before the whole new Clio is released?

Can I buy a Cup? Should I buy a 182 (a bit too expensive though IMO) or should I wait for some deals some months down the road when they are clearing out the Mk3 Clios?

There are a few still out there some are pre registered but yep Renault had some there slowly releasing from store for sale (they wont flood the market with them as it would lower there value)

Maybe but since the normal 182 is selling so well I dont think so, if sales fall they may but why risk loosing more expensive 182 sales to a Cup version

The new Clio Sport 2006. Id buy the one you like (which seems to be the Cup)

You can still buy the 172 Cup pre registered and lots of dealerships are selling them for about 10.5 k i believe.

For some of us they are not pointless luxuries

Cruise control,Abs/Esp,climate control,Xenon headlights,leather interior etc

They are some of the reasons i went for the 182.

A stripped out Cup is not everybodies cup of tea.IMO i have the best of both worlds of both performance and equipment levels :D

I doubt very much Renault will bring out a 182 CUP seeing as there are so called CUP options available in the form of a suspension and spoiler pack.

Just go and buy a pre reg cup. They are available delivery miles.. I tried a 182 and did not like it over my cup. Did not feel as quick as was not as nimble. I was ready to buy the 182 as they were doing 30% off at the time...but i could not bring myself to buy one...

As i said go and get a prereg cup and you won;t regret it.

Ive got leather, AC, Traction Control, ABS and all that stuff in my current car and its nice but I figure if I am going to sacrifice the comfort of my large car for the sake of track day car I might as well go all the way with no compromises!

However I have just looked on Autobytel at the 182 - the suspension and spoiler packs dont dont cost too much. I think Autobytel can sell the car with those packs for the same price as the basic 182 from a Renault dealer. Is the ride with the suspension pack a bit too hardcore for road use? Also I am not sure if I have seen the spoiler pack in the flesh? Does it look that much different?

What do think is the best deal on a 182 that could be screwed out of a Renault dealer? My local Renault dealer in Bristol is very poor when it comes to negotiating. My brother tried to buy a Clio and asked them to knock a bit off the price of metallic paint but they wouldnt even drop it by £50 so he told them to shove it and walked away! I would expect a serious discount on the cost of adding the packs and met paint - damn cheek not including met paint as standard....

Its not really about the same weight is it...

182 - 1110Kg (Renautsport site)

172 cup - 1021 kg (most other sites)

The ride quality of the 182 is better than the cup. It is nowhere near hardcore...and compared to the cup is much better for road use.

I have a cup, but sometimes wonder if it would not be better with all the extras (CD Autochanger; thicker glass; climate control; etc.,) there is little difference in speed and if you got the cup pack (think its spoiler and suspension/track) then youve got the rough with the smooth (a bit of "hardcore" with all the luxuries) and it only costs about .3 of a second to 60!!!

Good luck with your choice.

Toypop im confused now !!!

You say if you are going to sacrifice comfort then you might as well go all the way with no compromises, then you ask if the cup suspension is to hardcore for road use ???

Im confused now if you want a car for track use hence no compromises or one for road use hence asking is the CUP suspension too hardcore !!!

The spoiler pack consists of a front splitter and larger rear spoiler. Not massive differences but enough to improve the looks IMO

With the gear you are used to id say the 182 with suspension pack would suit you best,it is probably as close as you will get to what you are asking for and why sacrifice the gear when you can get the same performance as the CUP with all the trimmings ;)

lol Yeah I know it sounds contradictory!

I want the handling of the touring car - in that it just didnt feel like an FWD as it seemed to have little or no understeer when nailing the throttle at the apex of a turn.

What I dont want though is a car so low and stiff that you actually end up with less grip when running on bumpy roads.

Also my experience of Renault build quality is that if your car is crashing over bumps too much it is likely to fall apart!!! Even my softy 1.2 started to get rattles after a few months!!!

Get yourself a 2nd hand cup. Try it for a while, then test drive the 182, and see what offer for trade in they will give you.

Test driving them both, is probably the only way you will be able to make a decision.
