Whining noise under acceleration?

Car  330i. E30 Touring.
The Ph1's started making a weird noise under acceleration.

It's like a whiny, very fast rubbing noise. Sounds sort of like a supercharger whine.

Only does it when in gear, and when pulling. Not in reverse, either.

Any ideas lads?

Might be your rear bearings. I had it on mine a month back. Does it seem to get faster as you accelerate? try getting someone to sit in the back and listen.

Possibly, I suppose.

But, it's only making a noise when pulling. The noise does when you ease off the power!

that sounds like the bearings. Its fairly easy to check. jack it up and see if the wheel has play in it. just give it a good wiggle and if its moving side to side then you have your problem.

I've taken the butterfly plug out of the gearbox and oil leaks out, so there's plenty of oil in the box. Yet the box still whines.

Clutch bearings, perhaps?

Proper weird one this.

I've drained some oil out, and now the problem isn't so bad. the whining noise isn't all the time. But still comes and goes.

Eff knows.

Anybody? Or am I looking a new 'box?

wheel bearing would still whine if you were moving and knocked it out of gear!

Sounds like the box to me, have you tried some fresh oil?

Nope. Going to try that in the morning.

Short of that, I'm looking at taking it apart and having a look from there.

I'd go with a bearing in the box starting to fail, obviously currently only does it under load obviously. I'd stick with it for the time behind but be prepared to get a new box for it, how loud is it now?

It's pretty loud, and has increased in noise pretty quickly. I've started stripping it all down to get the box out. A friend of the family is a retired engineer, and has said he'd rebuild the 'box for me.

put it this way. My mates ph1 was exactly the same. whinning like a b**ch. Did it out of gear also when reved. Felt fine to drive, Then BOOOOOOM. Gear box was fooooked. Thought the noise was the cambelt (hadn't been changed yet on a 2000 :o) He's just paid 550quid for a full box refurb as all the cogs were fubard.

My advice, get the box looked at sharpish.

That was my thinking behind it. I've started stripping it all down, and it's not going to be driving anywhere until I've got the box done.

I only get whining in 5th gear lol, sounds just like a supercharger in 5th.
I have recently filled my box with fresh oil and no change at all. I just put it down to the box. If you have ever heard a Quaife gearbox they whine really loud from new. Its just bearing noise and can be normal.

Bro's PH1 started doing this recently.. he got a new clutch as he thought it was that but no difference. Haven't seen him since then so don't know if it's still doing it but last time he was saying "I really don't want to buy a new gearbox".

I think its normal. I`ve been searching all over the net and its not just clios that get a whining 5th gear. I`ve read some boxes the 5th gear is a straight cut and some don`t even have a synchro on 5th. Might just be normal. Even the harley davidson has whining in 5th gear apparently because of the design of the gear spline.

thrust bearing 9 times out of ten, sit with all the air con off stereo off etc in a quiet place, then sit in neutral and keep clutching down and up, th wine should be a spinning noise and will stop when u clutch down, and come on when u clutch up, mine were fooked at the time and it might not be that noicable it aint totally nailed.
