Not sure on the rear shock, can't imagine it would be that expensive though.

To give you an idea on price - a lot of Trophy owners swap the rear Sachs for Koni dampers, which can be bought new for under £250.

I'm thinking even if I end up buying a dog, so long as its a cheap dog surely the money saved will make it right for my track endeavours?
Am I right thinking a new engine is around £3-500, surely thats the worst that can happen? Am I being naive...

Why risk it for the sake of £1k? If it is a real dog with no service history etc.

Unless you are Sir_Dave with enough spares to build a Trophy and doesn't care that much!

Buy a fair one for £4.5k, track it, have fun in it, then sell for a fair amount.

Buy a dog, have to spend loads of money on things that keep going wrong, then have difficulty selling it on. No thanks.
