why are 172's so good on petrol?

  none, just walk
having owned a 172 at the start of the year, and being amazed by the mpg, i now have a mini and will be maybe trading it back in for a 172 cos the fuel consumption on the mini is a joke! £15 = 100 miles, its only a mini one and thats not hammering it around!

ive changed jobs so more further to drive and i just cant afford the petrol on the mini, i used to get 100 out of a tenner in my 172, im not really into hammering my cars but its nice to have the power, my old 172 was a 02 reg with 30k on the clock and it always returned good mpg so ill be getting a one like that again, would the mpg drop the more miles on it?

i know its only a 30 mile difference in the miles im getting for petrol but if you times that by 5 days a week driving to work it soon mounts up.
ive read numerous posts on this site about people getting amazing mpg on their 172's when i told the dealer when i handed it in i was getting the mpg i was getting he just laughed and said its impossible, but i wasnt dreaming it was it?

no idea why but I seem to get a great mpg in my cup, not as if I drive round too slow either:eek:

I used to do 150 miles a week in my 172 and it was really good on economy, that was going from a 1.2 Clio as well. Used to cost me £20 at the most per week and that was with a bit of weekend driving.

I'd say its good coz its light and the power doesn't come in until higher up the revs so if you drive sensibly you're not using the full power and therefore less fuel. Well thats my guess. :D

Thankfully I don't have to drive so much in the Megane as you don't get above 25mpg out of it. lol

I haven't reset my trip computer in my MK2 172 for just under 7,000 miles and the average reads 35mpg.

Its bloody impressive for such a rapid motor. :D :D

We're taking my missus car on a 200 mile round trip tomorrow, shall see what that says when we're back.

  Clio 172 mk2
a used to get about 38 mpg and upwards on my 172

took it to renault for a service and now can only get roughly 35 to 38 and a dont just always drive like a granny

weekends are ma treats in ma car instead of driving ma escort diesel van to work

NO idea why but I'm well happy. My old 182 Cup wouldn't budge over 34mpg, and my 172 FF is doing a sterling 37-38mpg! better than my 1.6 C2.

  Clio 172 CUP
had 42mpg out of the cup going to Blackpool, and 36mpg on the way back, thanks to M6 toll for reducing the MPG!

  Lotus Elise 111R
I get about 350 miles out of a £40 odd quid tank, generally over 35 mpg. I don't drive slowly by any means, but a spirited drive seems to improve mpg rather than kill it! Almost as if it's saying "thanks for the clean out" and away we go again. I love my FF 172 !!

Hmm, i gather none of you get stuck in city centre traffic jams with any regularity then?

I only get about 27 - 28 MPG out of my 182, but i do drive it hard at every opportunity, and it spends a lot of time in jams. As such, i still regard that as an impressive figure. Some of the big heavy turbo hot hatches of modern times would be lucky to get out of the teens IMO, and even my old Fabia vRS only managed 36 MPG in the same conditions (and that was a TDI).

err im getting 32 combined 37 on mway with cruise enabled (works better than feathering as it measures the fuel fro you rather than your right foot spooling the turbo in and out all the time)

Simple answer.

You all drive slow.

No 2 litre car driven normally (by my standards) would reach 30mpg, let alone 35-40!!!

I get 45 in my DCi!!!! However I have a funny feeling if you were following me at "40mpg pace" in a 172 you would be saying bye bye to my rear pretty sharpish...

With a lot of motorway miles it's about 30 MPG in my 172 mk2 but during the week it's mostly short distances in town for me and than it's about 23 MPG.

I drive mine quite hard, but not crazy and get around 35mpg on average, altho she is due the 72k service and cambelt change so who knows after that.

Having said that, if you fill em up then go on a long motorway journey you get easily 38-40 mpg, least my FF 172 does any way.

No otherwise i'd have said $30 wouldn't I :)

What I mean is, on putting £30 in my tank - my usual 'fill-up' it'll return crica 32mpg. I never fill it up to the brim, heavy stuff that petrol ;)

I wouldnt say that. I leave nearly all traffic behind just from smooth driving and anticipating what other drivers might do and get 34mpg urban. The thing I love most about having the power of these cars is that you can drive on your own in between traffic.

When you move off with the traffic you are with, there is usually a gap between the group you moved off with and the group that moved before. You can leave your lot behind with ease and drive in between the pockets of traffic.

Therefore no hard breaking or accelerating needed and you save the petrol and your pocket. I leave the hard driving to the early hours of the morning when there are hardly no other cars around.

I know if I lived near some twisties up north like a lot of you on here, my car would live in the early 20's as she would be getting what she deserves. No fun booting on straightaways.

Did Newcastle - Edinburgh - Glasgow at weekend in 03 172 ff with thirty pounds worth of Shell optimax. Average mpg 39.4mpg. This invloved a68, M8, M75/M6 A69. Lots of differrent roads and varying traffic with lots of overtaking.

My pop's drives an s60 t5 and he averages 27mpg on a good steady run.

I only ever average around 28mpg in my 182 , same when i had the 172 . I'm a bit sceptical about some of these high mpg figures tbh .
