Why buy Blu Ray DVD Players?

  182
Can someone justify why comet and other stores are trying to sell these blu ray dvd players for near £600 when you can just buy a ps3 for much cheaper and it still does the same job?

Quality. PS3 won't be up to the same standards as a high-end dedicated Blu-Ray player. Same reason you can buy a £6,000 car and a £600,000 car.

actually not quite true the ps3 is better than alot of the stand alone players and is upgradeable unline most of the others

Aye it's always the same isn't it, DVD players had the same pricing structures. It would be really interesting to know what these £600+ players look like, compared to say a ps3 though :)

I think you'll find it's probably only better than SOME of the standalones. The higher end jobs that go up to and beyond £1000 will walk all over it.

By the time you get to that sort of level though, your TV would be that good that you wouldn't disgrace it with a console...

The PS3 is indeed a very competent blu ray spinner and upgradable but dont forget PS3 profit margins are non existent or low? Unlike the stand alones which probably are quite fat.

When your talking standard DVD players there is a pretty large difference over cheap and expensive ones

I think the PS3 profit margin is actually minus lol. They're banking on making money on the games licencing (same as 360). Which is a bit of a pisser when a) no ones buying your console and b) the games that are available are gash

You talk the talk ok but i'm betting you haven't done many side by side comparisons to back up your point.

Not saying i disagree, but you can't just say something is worlds apart because of the price tag without proving it.

Isnt it all a bit pointless, as in by the time you start comparing quality between 2 different Bluray sources, you are more likely to have issues with cabling, or the TV...
What I mean is the picture will be pretty perfect anyway, and to most people the difference would be zero unless put side by side, something thats never likely to happen....
Its all a bit an*l tbh......

PS3 is as good as any 1st gen standalone player, confirmed by several of the hi-fi mags reviews (not ps mags) also most of the standalone players made before July have been slated as potentially "obsolete" in the eyes of the same mags because they wont all accept firmware updates so the BD-Java issue which at the time wasn't fully resolved due to Bluray not ratified meant that any changes to BD-Java wouldn't be recognized by those players

Why anyone would have spent between £600 and £1k on those players is beyond me
If you look at the sheer support from studios and leading electrical manufacturers who back Bluray and also that blockbuster have all but stated they aren't interested in HD-DVD then on paper you'd have to provide a miracle for HD-DVD to win

Isn't that common practice on the CS forums, everybody is an expert.

I watched a bit of casino royale on a ps3 at work set up on a cheap goodmans 19" hd monitor, it was a fantastic image, obviously a better quality screen should give even better clarity but what i saw was great.
I read in what home cinema a while back when they reviewed the ps3 as a blu-ray player, basically it got good reviews because it was performing very well for a 'budget' blu-ray player, apart from a few fuzzy pixels when panning, but if this is stuff that can be updated to fix anyway then it gets a thumbs up.
When blu-ray movies become a bit more reasonably priced it will definately be my choice for high definition video.

And probably why I stopped giving my experience in the first place. b****cks to you both if when I offer my time I get you both confronting me agressively for it...

Anyway Hoff, did you not want the kit now? You just went quiet...

I've only heard good things about the PS3 BR player, but then again I've only heard good things about the 360 HDDVD player...

I have neither so can't comment personally, I just love the way my mates with PS3's bring up the old "If I'd bought a BR player on it's own it would've cost me more"... Who would buy a BluRay player for the sake of it is my question though!

is it your experience though Mike, have you compared the quality of a stand alone bluray player and a PS3?

PS3 is first and foremost for me a bluray player and secondary a games machine.

The PS3 has a major advantage over most bluray players in that its firmware can be upgraded so when new features on bluray discs are unveiled it can be supported by the player, so the clever money is on a PS3 for bluray.

People are too quick to slate products just because of a price tag or its not its primary function but in this case its kind of a sleeper, the clever mans choice!

I kind of agree that a PS3 is the sensible choice but you can get a Sony or Samsung Blu-ray player for around £330 now. The only thing that would sway me if I wasn't a gamer is the fact that the PS3 isn't the quietest machine and I would hope a dedicated player would be a quieter.

thats wierd as my ps3 is totally silent.

My 360 on the other hand when playing HD-DVD's is like being in a server room lol, have to really crank it up!

Hm only wandered as mine is stood on it's end, and apart from a quick 30 second blast of the fan sometimes (it's near a radiator) I can never really hear it at all.

my mates is sat on a glass shelf flat lots of space and its very noisy when playing a film bit less than my 360 but still loud

Mine isn't obtrusive and doesn't bother me but it isn't silent by any means. I have mine on it's end, I found it to get a bit warmer horizontal.

mine is on its end too and its about 3ft from me when watching a film and i honestly can't hear it, even in the quiet parts of a movie

Luck of the drawer I guess which is noisy which isn't. My old 360 used to be stupidly loud the replacement I got a few months ago is near silent. Heard the same with the PS3. Some are louder than the 360 some are near silent.

Just depends on the fans some are noisier than others.

From sony themselves: PS3 is 25% better than Sony 1st gen Blu-Ray player. But the new 2nd gen player is 40% better than PS3. And sony's are damn gd blu-ray players.

Thats a top reason for getting a PS3 alone.
