Why do people lower rear more than front???

I've always wondererd why alot of people like to make the rear of the car lower than the front :S (in a fwd car)

Surely this makes the handling alot worse due to weight transfer and all that.....and it looks a bit gash IMO!

Thoughts?
 
Personally, not speaking for everyone else here btw, but I thought it was to do with the Clio's highish bumper and trying to make it "lower", to try and level the car out. Or the weight of the engine and trying to make the car as level as possible without leaning forward. But yeah I'd also like to know in case I'm wrong :p

Exactly my point! I see so many "modified" cars running it "slammed" at the back, and I just dont get it.

Rake?

When I lowered mine 50mm all round, the back sat lower than the front. Looked as if I lowered the back more but it was all the same.
 
mmy front hits the floor under heavy braking, rakeLIFE. fwd looks so agressive that way too...

slammed at the back is a chavs wet dream, cheap springs usually.

Mine looks slightly lower at the rear than the front running ghetto apex springs, new springs as well so they aren't sagging... yet. Bring on the billys in the new year ;)

I guess rake is having the front lower than the rear? Thats what I want anyway :D
 
One way is to put it on ramps and measure from a fixed point near each wheel (same point each side for front and then another same point for the rear) to the ramp. If the front measurement is lower than the rear, you have rake. As to how much you have that's up to how you set up the suspension. This will also tell you if you're level offside to nearside, which is always a good plan.

For me the wheel arch gap is bigger at the front for the simple reason of clearance, hard cornering (hairpin) brings on a swam of bees noise from the tyre rubbing on the wing\bumper mounting point just above the outside edge of the front wheel. Just raised it a bit each lap session time out until it never happened. Could've maybe hardened the suspenison up perhaps but can drive the car to my ability at the moment so raising was the easiest route to getting rid with out having to adjust a millon things to compensate for harder suspension...or couldv'e hammered the offending mounting point into the middle of next week.

Not the only way to skin this cat though......

Never really noticed it with clios tbh. All the chavs up here have there saxo's and 106 arse on the ground and the front end up higher never quite understood their method.

You say that but i had a 106 GTI from the owner of Skip Brown cars, and they had tweeked the rear lower on that. Looked w**k, so got it put back to standard settings.

I think it originally came from the older hatchbacks having a torsion bar on the rear so in theory they could go as low as they wanted whilst their front springs only allowed 35-55mm lol!

My old 106 giving it the rake :) I used to hate seeing 106's slammed at the rear. I think half the time it was ppl who didn't know how to lower torsion bars properly!
