Why is insurance such a con?

  Silver 172 cup
I have been planning to buy a 182ff with cup packs and it was pretty much a done deal but I phoned up direct line just to make sure they would insure me, which I was pretty sure they would.
They have told me that because it has the cup packs it is not standard and they won't insure anyone under 25 with modifications to the car, even optional extras.

Sadly I have 2 years named driver no claims and coming up to 2 years of my own so cant afford to go somewhere else and lose 2 years ncb.
I have got quotes and the difference between a ff182 and 182 cup is about £25.
Are they trying to say they would insure me on the cup as the suspension came standard and not as an optional extra.
I can't believe how petty insurers can be especially direct line. I would have left them if it wasn't for the named driver no claims.
This has pissed me off so much.

Rant over.

How old are you mate?
Get some quotes with just the 2 no claims, then ring them up with the quote number and ask if you can use the 2 other no claims and you'll pay straight away.

Although tht cup packs aren;t counted as mod's are they, just don;t tell them!

Insure the car as a CUP 182.

And telll them that its not modifyied as they come from the factory like this.

I would do that but if the worst did happen and i was in an accident they could quite easily turn round and tell me that i provided false details could they not?

lol fook off.

First of all, it's not like you've got a turbo conversion concealed under the car. It's not even as innocent as a different exhaust.

You've bought a car as it came from Renault, they would still carry out warranty work if it had one. So no, I wouldn't call it a mod, and I certainly wouldn't imply anything of that sort to my insurance company.

how much are you saving by staying with them? direct line are w*nkers but unfortunately they are the cheapest so im with them.

Ignore anyone who suggests giving the insurance company inaccurate information. It's not their necks on the line.

So if you were insuring a standard 182 with the cup packs, you'd tell them it was modified ?

Try elsewhere mate, at 21 with 2 no claims it should still be a decent price elsewhere. Try Adrian Flux and Greenlight.

Although as ClioKhunt says it came standard and warranty work would still be carried out, so that to me would say it is standard, non altered from the manufacturers spec.

Erm strange as this might sound I'd tell them the truth.. It's a 182 with factory fit options just like most people on this forum have done.

I have been quoted £545 for my renewel on my astra which is soon. Which is alot less than i can get anywhere else. I got a quote at the same time with a 182 and 182 cup and they came to £764 for the 182 and £776 for the cup. Thats what annoys me. I could get a cup but not a cupped ff.

I wasn't planning on giving any false information. I have pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I will have to wait longer before i can get a clio. Have always wanted one too.

id ring them back up and speak to there manager.....its standard with optional extra

i had alot of trouble with the fact i have a manx licence, some people in the company i was with classed it as an international one others classed it as a UK licence. even tho i know the international one was correct prob i thought my corner as i had another car insured with them at the time i told them that i told the person on the phone that i had a manx licence and they excepted it at Uk why has it changed this time......for having an 'international' licence my insurance preminum would have doubled!

direct line was cheap for me till i looked at the excess £750 wtf no thank you. i went with grenlight and i'm more than happy with them got my mods declaired. i'm 25 now but was 23 when i first took it out with them.

phone them back up and just say it is a 182, i never got asked if mine had cup packs, it came from the factory with them so why wouldnt they be classed as standard? as people have said, renault wouldnt do warrenty work if they were classed as a mod and ive had warrenty work done!

  Black Gold with cup packs
Try Bell mate and slam your mother on the policy. By butting my mother on my policy I saved £450.

  57 Ibiza Formula Sport
im with bell too, theyre by far the best in my opinion. was easy to prove my yr no claims too as theyre the same company as elephant who i was with last year :)

ive got my dad nd my boyfriends dad on my policy, with me as the main driver of course. reduced it from about £2500 to £1372! however, the excess is high with bell, £1000 before my 21st birthday and now im 21, it'll be £750 :( and you've gotta pay the full premium upfront or else it's ridiculous, they wanted over £2,000 if i paid monthly!

  MK5 R32
give greenlight a ring, they saved me £450 on my 182 insurance. also be careful with direct line and cup packs, they class it as a factory fit modification and wont insure it until your over 25. a good friend of mine smashed his up and they wouldnt pay out due to the 182 having cup suspension and antracite wheels!

I disagree with this 'declaring Cup packs' scenario. At the end of the day it left the factory like that so it isn't modified. If such things as air con and ESP etc were options would we all be declaring those? I think not!
At the end of the day if you provide your registration number to Renault (or the insurance company) they will be able to find out all the 'optional extras' that were fitted at the factory and it will be insured as such.

Indeed.

The only reason they sometimes charge people for cup packs, is because when they ask

"Has the car got any modifications or none standard parts" or whatever the line is.

Some people reply

"Yes, it's got Cup packs, which is basically different alloys, spoilers and it's lowered"

...... Of course they're going to charge you more if you say something like that.

Exactly.

If i order a 197, do i declare that it has cornering lights, recaros, climate as opposed to air-con etc etc added on...

  BMW M135i
Its a big fat grey area really, when you apply it as peperami says then no you shouldn't need to declare them and tbh its exactly the same thing.
I know I don't think i'd bother telling them about the cup packs, has anyone actually had a bump and had problems with it?

  Mondeo TXS Bardge.
i was just think in tthat basically what direct line is saying is that they wont in sure any one with optional extras, so that makes about 95%of drivers, metallic paint is an optional extra FFS.
get back on the phone and speak to the supervisor i had to speak to 6 people ar norwich union when i was getting a quote because the refused to accept my car was just a dynamique not a billabong, the billa being about £70 more expensive to insure for some mad reason. i had to get them to phone the DVLA and check thte V5 records lol
The very best they could offer me was £701, but bell is doing me fully comp with no millage limitations, well they havent asked a millage but have given me a quote still with the option to use other car for £520, thats with both parents on it, most policys adding the rents put the quote up!

By direct lines deffinition then, everyone who is briving a car that is not the base model and has not declared their "mods" has invalid insurance?

  Mondeo TXS Bardge.
exactly it just doesnt make sence, they must have misunderstood you.
the problem you have is that your NCB will only be valid with them, most insurers will nto validate the named driver NCB unless its one of their policys.
how many people do you know have the basic basic model??

I'm with Virgin insurance who are part of the same group as DirectLine. I had to add a temporary car recently and they dont ask, has the car been modified, they ask if the car has been modified or has any optional extras! This would include cup packs, and as the cup packs are a suspension alteration it is treated in the same way as a modification.

Basically a lot of companies have now caught onto things like the Cup packs!

EDIT: 4000th post :D

because they don't insure modifications under 25, its like ringing up and saying you have air conditioning as its an optional extra in the same way the cup packs are. so they class that as a modification then so is A/C as its additional to the basic spec. I would say there are no modifications but its up to you. As far as im concerned the car is how you bought it.

  Silver 172 cup
I have given up now after much arguing and not getting anywhere.
I can't get any reasonable offers anywhere else. The best I have been quoted is £1700 which is ridiculous considering direct line will do it for under £800 without cup packs.
I have decided I am going to look for a 172 cup as insurance will cost the same. Which again is crazy as they must be more dangerous than a cupped 182 yet they will insure me as long as it is standard. Not many standard ones about though lol. I'm not bothered about the air con and stuff as i don't use mine anyway. Just open the windows.

Why don't you give greenlight a call? I pay 590 fully comp on my turbo 182. I even declared an accident that happened a few days before my renewal.

insurance is such a con, when i was in cornwall visiting parents over xmas i got an online quote from direct line of 432quid a year for my ff 172, back in bradford where i live the same company quoted me 1478!!!! the only time ive ever had a car broken into was in cornwall!!!! i couldnt believe it, that is such a scandelous difference, insurance should be based on driving experience and the person getting insurance, not what car it is or where they live! robbing barstewards
