My sister has one albeit a slightly older one. Its not been plain sailing but generaly the car seems good. Hers is the the quattro 170 which goes very well indeed. Nice cars but unless doing mileage i wouldnt buy one.

If you can, get someone with VCDS to go with you and scan it to see if there is any underlying problems which obviously can't be seen. Can save a lot of headaches and cash.

My dad had a remapped 170 which went very well indeed, but had DPF issues due to him doing low miles

I drove an A3tdi 170 this morning and it was incredibly dull. I was hoping the acceleration would be OK but it wasnt anything special. Going to see the one in the OP in a minute but cant see myself buying it. Is there such a thing as a diesel hot hatch with a fast engine but really soft suspension (she absolutely hates my 182 on bilsteins you see and wont use it)

  R5gtt, 182, volvo...
Avoid all new diesels from 2004, the emission laws and changes to the engines are completely fking up anything that made them value for money..

Dpf problems are a daily problem for all brands, then there's dmfs, egr's, engines getting blocked with sh1t and that's not including the normal £1000 diesel pump risks..

So, get a nice s3

Could always look at a Megane 175 Lux?

As already mentioned stay away from the diesels unless you do the mileage. The corrosion protection on these are crap now pre 04 cars will last forever where as later cars are beginning to rust from the 5yr mark do expect rusting arches in about 2 years

At any mileage... There is no longer any saving in diesels.. Mines trashed me for £1200 in less than 8000 miles, does no more than 45mpg and is currently on the drive with no fuel tank as its drawing in air to the lines.. Another £200

I've been trawling the internet finding nothing but more diesel woes.. A friends new ford connects been back 3 times for dpf problems..

No, just no, don't do it, ever, buy a petrol, diesels are dead..

I was looking at s3's and didn't want the expense.. They're cheap..

  Whichever has fuel
Unless a derv is cheap enough to throw away (like mine is) I wouldn't have any modern diesel. As you said, just too much to go wrong.

My Clio cost me £1000 and saves me £50 a month on fuel, £20 a month on tax and £200 a year on insurance.

The moment it breaks, I won't waste money fixing it, it will be scrapped.
