will a 2005 182 gearbox fit my 172 ph1 2001

hi all , will a 182 gearbox fit my ph1 172 , i think mine is cable driven not 100% sure though ??? replacing mine as i get a slight crunch in 3rd gear and could do with putting a new clutch kit in as well

ph 1 is different I'm pretty certain, ask R20 CWH or .GAZ. as they have both had issues I believe.

Also, 182 gearing is slightly different from mk2 ph2 172 with slightly longer first gear and maybe some more subtle differences.

I think it's the same box physically, but it wont have a speedo sensor as the 182 uses the ABS sensor.

Ratios are different too to account for the 182's extra weight.

Physically fit yes, but you won't have a working speedo.

I took mine to a local engineers they fitted the worm drive from my old 172 gearbox and drilled a tapered hole for the cable! Works perfect! cost me about £80 from the engineers but at the end of the day its a better box - bolt on diff instead of the crappy circlip type!

so you would advise getting the 182 box , its only £150 , and pay to get the worm drive from my box and threaded for the cable hole ??? are the 182 box's stronger than the 172 box's ???
