will the tom tom work?

thinking of getting one for my mum for her birthday the go 300 from comet for 250 beaners, will use it on occsasion for long trips, just wondering ive heard all this talk bout heat reflective windsreens sopping the signal. is this just in 172/182's? i have 1.2 billabong 2003 will this have one of these windscreens?

The windscreen is in the Mk2, Phase1 RXE so it's not just the RenaultSport's.

It does block the signal a fair bit, so much so you will not get a proper signal for it to operate.

ALL the clio range 2001+ came with Heat Reflective Windscreens,
you may find some didnt but on the most majority they did. Its not just the RenaultSport Models.

Easy way to check is to see if ur screen has a "pink" tint to it from the front of the car

Also you will notice a small square "cut out" in the centre of the screen indication you have a reflective screen.

On this instance you need to purchase an external antenna for the unit to pickup a signal. IIRC there about £50-70

Ive got the TT 300 and i thought after moving into the 182 that it had become faulty, not realising it was the windscreen, but i'm just going to get the external antenna off ebay when ones going cheap.

However i did have it on the right handside near the wingmirror, but does improve in the centre of the windscreen.

buy her a garmin i3 for £145 from woolworths! It fits just below the transparent patch on the windscreens and gets a perfect signal that way! Garmin support and loads of other stuff can be added to it like speed camera locations etc! Bargin!!!

Depends on what Nav u want, how much you want to spend etc...

TomTom Units are rated very high in the market.

I tried out a Tom Tom 300 a couple of weeks ago for my boss, in my 2005 Dynamique with reflective windscreen. Just suckered it to the screen and it worked fine with a good signal.

However when I was finding a place to put my antena in the summer for my origin b2 I found that the screen really effected the quality of the signal and even putting it the square patch wasnt much better, so the one for the b2 ended up on the parcel shelf.

As for the reflective screens, before I had my 2005 Dynamique (with reflective screen) I had a 2001 Dynamique which didnt have one.

I had that issue with my Road Angel,but got a re-radiating antenna from Networx Automotive,cheaper than the blackspot item too.its not listed on the website but they do sell them very reasonably priced,think i was about £35.00

The Road Angel one from Blackspot is £20, bought one a couple of weeks ago.

Please please do have a look at the TomTomONE - RRP £280, but I got mine for £220.

It replaces the Go300, and gets a better signal through the riflective screens.

Tomtom 1 has a bluetooth function too, so you can download traffic reports witha mobile!!also contains a better processer and peaks up more sats (12 apparatly)

TomTom ONE or Garmin Nuvi are your best bet for a heat reflective windscreen as they have a more sensitive chipset (SiRF III instead of the older SiRF II found in the TomTom GO range).

ive got the tomtom one and i get a signal with 9 different satellites every time in 4 different cars within 30 seconds ! (been posting a lot about this recently). i stick it left of my steering wheel on my windscreen and i lose no signal at all !
and ive downloaded different voices to it, i have got austin powers today......you have reached your destination, groovy driving baby yeah !

I had a TomTom Go 300 in my 182 (with a heat reflective screen) and it took ages to fix to a signal in the mornings and would not hold onto it. I tried moving it all over the windscreen without much success. Changed it for a Garmin Nuvi 300 and never looked back.

Either way, the new chipset SiRF III is more sensitive than the older one with faster TTF. It's like comparing a Pentium II to a Pentium IV.

The TomTom ONE or Garmin Nuvi 300 would be the way to go for anyone buying one now, which both have the new chipset. The TomTom software is better as it is more flexible in customisations: voices, alerts, etc. Sadly, I can't get Ozzy to tell me to "take the f*cking left turn" on my Garmin Nuvi 300!

so simple to use not complicated at all, going to hard wire it this weekend..
