williams gear box on a 172

  iceberg 172
My gear box has been whining for a while now and mate mate has a Williams gearbox that has had a recent recon for sale. i have a ph 2 172 ff will a Williams box fit and is it a straight swop thank you.

Ive done it the other way around, so they seem to be pretty interchangable, as Laine says though, you need the mount and tray too not just the box, but thats all of 5 quids worth from a breakers as mk1 1.8 16v are the same parts for those bits as the williams.

not a straight swap in a way... you need to change the lower part of the upper gearbox mount(one under the battery tray) to the one that is on a mk1 clio the three bolt holes are closer together. iirc there is a threaded hole on the underside of the box that the twisted dogbone mount fits..

but to be honest i would'nt put it in not saying all the jb3/jc5 boxes are crap but the circlip would play on my mind. i would sell the williams box and put the wonga onto a 182 box where if iirc they have the revised diff where its bolted in and not on a circlip.

alot easier putting the 172 box in a williams
