Window Tints Rant

Got pulled by the fuzz last night, woohoo, first time ever in 8 years.

Got a producer, ok that's fine.

Then was escorted to the back of the police depo for VOSA to do testing, basically test the window tints.

I've had the car 2 weeks, and it went through it's MOT with flying colours on Thursday so I really didn't think anything could be wrong, anyway, turns out that window tints aren't checked on the MOT, when they checked my front windows they said there's only 30% of light going through, that to me seems like bull poo.

They even said my windscreen is only letting in 79% so just passed? It's clear glass, how can it only be 79%?

I've now got 10 days to take off the front tints, which I have been told is a bloody nightmare of a job, and then by black ctr, with rear tints really is going to look like a bread van

Is there anything I can do...what happens if I just ignore them?

What really gets my back up is that there is a number of Eastern Europeons around this area now, one of whom crashed into my mate last week, no insurance nothing, do the cops want to know? Of course not, that would be too much hard work for them to chase him and prosecute, but me with my world destroying tints I'm obviously going to be taking over the world in a bread van!

Yer I'm gonna get them off, but needed to rant first lol.

Spoke to my mechanic mate, he said they quite often get galaxys in that have had it done and need removed, so he's coming round with some small blades and tar and glue remover on Saturday, looking forward to it already :dapprove:

my brother in law got stopped a while ago in his Dodge Ram Pickup track due to window tins his was showing 10% light and got a claws to take them off within 7days, and was unable to drive it till he did this, once he removed the film he had to then go back to the police station to get the claws taken off.

I got my rear windows tinted really wanna do the fronts but dont want the same thing to happen,

The thing the really annoyed me is when Robbie Williams come to Milton Keynes for his concert he arrived in a Land Rover with cops all round the car going down the dual carrige way with jet black all round windows. and i bet he didnt even get a smack on the hand.

Yep about an hour of my time wasted last night, and god knows how many hours are gonna be wasted at the weekend.

I think some windows are tinted to begin with, therefore you need to take this into account before tinting them further.

I work at toyota and cars are still coming from the production line with windows tinted so how does that work, police got nothing better to do.

That's true, I never got them tinted, I wouldn't have personally because I would have been even more annoyed if I shelled out cash to get them tinted and then had to remove them.

I just (and perhaps naively) assumed that if it goes through the MOT, I'm a ok!

Yer, that's what I thought, I should have asked to see it work to 100% on their glass or something.

But I'm not even kidding there was about 20 cops and VOSA guys and gals there watching this happen, so I was a bit intimidated

Tints seem 10x darker at night. my rear 'medium smoke' are like looking thru limo tints in complete darkness!

you should have asked to see the calibration certificate. for the reading to be legitimate they have to get them calibrated every so often, just like their mobile laser guns, they have to be calibrated every day (it wont hold up in court if it has not been calibrated) happened to me, cam said i was doing 91 in a 70, asked for calibration certificate to be shown in court and they never had one so i got off scott free (and i was actually doing 79)

The testing is done by a light meter.

Basicly has a front and back, window goes in between the 2 halfs of the unit.
The light is then produced from 1 side and a reading taken.

So no difference be it night or day.

Jus red the first page of this. Totally feel for you as the same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. Your tend to find your be ok until that are bored. Unluck for me my tug for my tints was when i was leaving the n.e.c in Birmingham on my way out of Max power live. The cops were literally sitting on the roundabout outside the car park-they gave me two options- peel off the tint there and then or they would inpound my car and id be getting the train home and being that i had to travel back to Essex i chose the easy option!

Erm what about people driving with sunglasses on surely it's the same pricipal, they are tinted??? and the Veils on the women (oh sorry no couldn't do anything about that it might be racist ) But the millions driving around with no insurance oh well thats alrite then why would that matter, This country Fuks me off royal sometimes!!

The law is for the night time, you don't drive with your sunglasses on at night. I hope!

I had limo in the back and 20% in the front but that was before the legal limit was changed and that was 35% then so they were 15% to dark and had no problems .Now its 50% i think or it might have changed again

Well i had mine done by someone in the family and he showed me all the letters that he was sent from the company that made the films with all the legal limits it was being changed when i had mine done the first time

The law has been there for a few years but only recently have they started to clamp down on it. Funny thing is that local police dont give to sh*ts but its the traffic cops that bother you. They had a special gadget to test the light but they only use to have one per unit so you had to be lucky to be caught by the ones who were acvtually carrying it at the time.
Very pleasing to see that our Taxpayers money is being spent well :rasp:

If you think you are going to get pulled when you are leaving a cruise or the lad that commented on max power live, before you set off if you think there is going to be loads of fuzzy men about take the following action:

wind both front windows down

remove fuse for windows from fuse board

job done

changing the subject a little: -

it was a few weeks back, just jumped into my car and was going to pick the girlfriend up one friday night to go to cinema, i was drivin throug my village (which i hasten to add i have lived here all my 24 years of life) when a traffic car appeared behind me with the blues n twos on, the street in question is one way and lined with cars parked both ways, no where to go i ensured i was going the full 30mph to nearest wide part to move out of way, thinking he had a job and going urgently, to find he swerves infront of my car and two traffic cops jump out the volvo. driver then runs to my car and grabs handle to open door (auto door lock activated so i put window down for him to grab keys from ignition and then tell me to unlock door, after doing so being thrown against the wall, and been fed some bullshit about i was a fail to stop, - i said i was getting out of way cos i could not stop for him to pass or i was blocking road. so then the intimidation starts all the usual questions, is it yours etc etc, and after the other cheese head searching the car in and out for drugs weapons etc the one incharge was quizzin me in his car, hastening to add this took half an hour, in the end - producer.
i am a business owner and most people in my village know quite well who i am and where my shop is, but the traffic who were "just passing" didnt and thought i was going too fast for that road, although he did not see me just heard the engine and zorst,
i took the collar numbers of the officers involved and wrote to the chief constable, where i got a short letter of appologies that pointed out that it is a routine operation to stop modified cars now. - TOTAL w*****s

oh and to top that off missed the film so had a good night, cheers lads

Thats right they only changed it in that last few years it used to 35% in the front and then it went up to 50% i dont think they like anything now when i had mine done the first time it was 35% i had 20% and had no problems but now they have got quite funny about it now
