Windows 10 Woes!

What a pile of poo Windows 10 is!

Upgraded from 8.1 last week, and the thing wouldn't start at all, it would say "Diagnosing your PC" then come up saying "Unable to start your PC" bla bla bla.

Clean installed it yesterday, now Banana (may as well be called that), the start button and no apps at all work. Searched google, and it seems thousands are affected by this. Tried all the solutions out there - registry changes, command prompt stuff etc. Many people say create a new profile - tried to do that but can't because the link to "PC Settings" doesn't work either.

So really, it is a load of old poo!

No, it's not pooh. Sorry to hear you've had a bad experience though. There was always going to be teething problems. It's the best OS Microsoft have released yet (which might not be saying a lot depending on how much of a Microsoft lover/hater you are). For the thousands of issues out there, 20 million installs is pretty good going with a generally happy user-base. Stick with 8.1 for a few months then try again

I'm using it now on my really really old laptop (It orginally had vista on it lol) and it runs fine.
Upgraded on my dads laptop to, with no issues.

I think it's great so far.

Sounds like you're having real issues, Mike. But Windows 10 is a real step forward. It's more slick and focused than 7 and light years ahead of the horrendous 8 that preceded it.

As Andy says, there will always be issues with a new OS. I experience the weird 'not booting' issue that @Gareth has mentioned occasionally. I also had an arm-wrestle with my PC wanting to use the Microsoft-provided nVidia drivers over the latest ones from nVidia's website.

But running on a 2010 mobo with a 2008 CPU and a couple of graphics cards from 2013 with pretty much zero issue - is a great achievement in my book.

I've tried downgrading to 8.1 - it won't allow it because I can't get into PC settings to do it lol!

Well, I have a half functioning PC at least. Will wait to see what Microsoft do, I am one of many many people who are suffering this problem!

Apart from a sending issue in outlook it's been spot on for me on both the laptop and the desktop.

I fooked up the start menu at one point but that was my own fault!

Trying to get used to it. But so far it's pretty good.
Only problem is when I bought the PC in Germany I had to buy a language pack to get it into English.
This has carried over to this OS. But the login screen is still in German.

I'm having really strange issues with Remote Desktop across a number of PCs.

My first attempt to RDP in gives a grey screen with a white dot.

My second attempt (after a few minutes) gets me to the desktop but it's just a picture, i.e. you can't click or highlight anything.

My third attempt works fine.

This is consistent from day to day and is the same from different PCs to different PCs!?!?

@cs_rich - you're definitely using the Pro version or above, are you? The Home Edition doesn't support RD - as seen in the chart below:-

Yep, definitely Pro.
Problems occur when going Pro -> Pro and also from Home -> Pro. The destination 'Pro' has a problem with two entirely different Pro setups, both of which worked absolutely fine prior to Win10.

I hada good go with 10 over the weekend. The non-customisable nature of the start menu is a little odd. I get why they put JUST your most used programmes on there but what if I want to pin actual stuff on there? Nope? Oh, fine then.

No, not paid at all. But I'm familiar with OS development, driver development and so forth and the effort and tech involved. It's leagues ahead of Win7 and Win8 already, but there will be teething issues.

Incidentally might be worth trying again with Win10. The start menu is fully customisable and more so than ever before. But I get folks don't like change and some are prone to knee-jerk reactions at the slightest whiff of change.

Which is why I went from 3.11 to 98, to XP, to 7
Sure they'll have bughunts to do for months, but my main thing with any MS OS is to wait until service pack 1 comes out.

Also, I don't want Win 10 to start making my CAD software demand updates

That's fine and makes perfect sense, mate. In many cases I would suggest holding off until it's had time to mature (especially if you have a stable Win7/8 setup and/or rely on your existing setup for work or other vital stuff). In fairness Microsoft are working tirelessly on Win10 improvements and bug fixes (as you would imagine) but - yes - it will take some time to smooth out the many initial hiccups, of which there are many.

My own opinion is that it's fantastic (as you can probably tell). However, I wouldn't shove it down folks throats. But I would say to treat it for what it is; an incredibly complex operating system that has only just launched. There will be thousands of bugs, some more serious than others, but it's going to mature and evolve. Having had a bit of first-hand insight into what's going on under the hood I am extremely impressed how well it's fared at launch. I may have been lucky as I've got a running Win10 system seemingly as stable as my Win7 and Win8 setups. Over the last 18 months or so I've been following and using the Win10 early access builds and developer builds and have been impressed with how relatively stable they have been. For the changes that have been made for this release of the operating system I am genuinely impressed. And, being an old and miserable b**tard, it takes a lot to impress me.

I'm certainly not a Microsoft salesman but I am a fan of what they've done with Win10, and what they plan to do with it.

I've run a clean install of Windows 10 Pro on our home Computer, it has been seamless so far. I only needed to install 2 drivers which the OS / Windows update didn't pick up.

I like the Microsoft account integration, as your user account. In the words of my partner "that's cool, so I don't need to login Hotmail, it just works" - "Yes Laura"

That's one thing I haven't enabled - account integration. I'll stick with my normal windows account, I don't want windows tied to a MS account imo. (plus I don't use hotmail - didn't realise people still did!??!?!)

On my work laptop it has sent the onboard gigabit LAN doolally, I can only get transfer speeds of 200k/s over gigabit LAN, instead of 80MB/s previous (so 400x slower). Tried everything: disabling windows firewall, pushing, pulling, direct connection (Xover cable) and nothing works. Yet on wireless LAN I get typical speeds (8-9MB/s).

The onboard NIC is made by JMicron and I can't find an updated driver anywhere

Well, its a severe LOL at my Windows Woes!
Reinstalled windows 10, and the PC Settings function starts working again, so I go into it and "go back to previous operating system" for it to bring back to life the very buggered previous Windows 10 installation.

Out came the factory reset disk, Windows 8, and now got a bajillion updates to do lol!

But, my PC works!!!

You can't... however, you can if you keep your battery under 25% with battery saver activated lol.

I must be missing something? Why would you 'go back to previous operating system' if you've just done a fresh install?

If the previous install is corrupt, it will simply make your new install nice and corrupt too, if you revert back to it.

If it took me weeks of struggling, I'd still persevere than install Windows 8. I can almost smell that fresh aroma of turd, just mentioning its name.
