Windows Detected a Hard Drive Problem (windows 7)

i keep getting the above error appear on my screen

it says

back up your files immediately to prevent information loss and then contact the computer manufacturer.

but the computer seems to be working just fine.

now the other day the wifi stopped working and i took the laptop to bits, removed the motherboard to make sure everything was fine. put everything back together and wifi worked again

what to do???

Do what it says.

As far as I can remember, that message is reported by the drive itself to windows (smart). The drive is seeing an increasing amount of physical errors indicating that it's about to fail.

Download crystaldiskinfo (free). It will check the integrity of your drives and tell you if something is wrong.

I see this all the time at work. download Seatools/UBCD, make a bootable usb drive and run the drive diagnostics for your manufacturer of drive.
If there isnt one specifically for it - SeaTools does them all.

as said above, this is reported by the disk's SMART system (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) The drive is on it's way out due to physical breakdown. a format and reinstall will likely not help and if anything, be worse as you're writing to a disk damaged at the physical level.

Hard drives can be had for next to nothing these days!

so can anyone recommend a SSD to me, doesnt need to be big. my current hard drive is only 120gb

Crucial V4/M4 if you want an SSD. Or, if you're willing to cover the postage and a minor fee, i've a 1TB sata drive here i don;t need!

Clarification: it's a desktop drive, I have one or two spare 2.5 for laptops but they're only 120-160gb, you're welcome to those for the postage alone

Exactly this, back it up ASAP!

And exactly what Uncle_Gravy said, I'd personally go for Samsung 830/840 Pro or Crucial M4 only.
