Windows.old

Yes. Brilliant. I didn't want it. I didn't ask for it.

Background;

I did a fresh install of Windows 7. The format option was greyed out for C: which set alarm bells ringing straight away.

Everything is running just fine except I can't delete the f**king gay windows.old directory. It complains that it can't find some SecureROM files. OK, great. So erm...f**k the directory off anyway? No, can't do that. I've tried safe mode even, and it still complains.

Am I mistaken in thinking that as a fresh install, NOTHING that was installed before should have any impact on the new OS? In my case it seemingly does.

Windows, you're s**t!

  Better than yours. C*nt.
Go back, do the fresh install, deleting the C:\ partition and recreating it.

Not sure on the SecuROM thing though.

What I said should work then... Do you want 4x 72GB Raptors BTW? In a 5-bay hot-swap enclosure...

Could you pull out the HDD, usb it to another computer, reformat it, then put it back in this one and do the install again.

Thats what i'd try anyway.

No dude. Just an old Raptor for the OS.

Ah. No worries.

Funnily enough, my m8 has had the same issues with reformatting his PC in the past few days - he never appears to have a completely 'clean' drive. He's only using a single drive too.

I think he's retrying it with RAID in the next day or two, though.

I take it you used an upgrade disk to install the OS? It sounds like a permissons problem, try editing the permissions on the directory to allow you full control. Then try deleting...alternatively, if you want, I can upload the ISO for the full version of windows 7 pro, if you have a key?

Thought - are you running it in AHCI mode? As unless you load the drivers I think it's limited in what it can do...

He'll have Ultimate.

Unfortunatley havent got ultimate on my MS Licensed downloads page, just pro...

I doubt it will be anything to do with AHCI, win 7 has the necessary drivers built in...Im yet to see a problem with AHCI...

It's a full install disc of Windows 7 Ultimate, ran from boot, and custom selected. I suspected some issues when it said my mobo drivers were already installed once I was in Windows.

I've just started again and deleted C as suggested. What was wrong with the old system seen in XP? Format. Install. Done.

This really isn't doing much to give me renewed faith in Windows :D

my mate had an issue too... he already had windows 7 and decided he wanted to reinstall but couldnt completley format.

i read on a link (although very quickly) that w7 makes a 'secret' partition to store boot information (judging back the lack of system files on C:\ i guess it could be right)

which only makes sense if you already have w7 on the pc

so this useless triva doesn't really help roy, ho hum.

Unusual - I've not come across it and I've built a fair few 7 machines now! I'll see if I can't recreate it.

I was being sarcastic...but anyway, just noticed autoroute 2010...does anyone actually use this? lol

Haha. Never mind!

And yeah, I use it quite a bit - it's good for working out my mileage claims and that on.

Knows. I've done a million Windows installs on a million machines, and they all meant something.

This Windows 7 Install stank from the moment I tried to install my chipset drivers. Well, it stank from the moment the installer wouldn't let me format C:

C: isn't even a partition. It's a 10k rpm standalone Raptor.

Yeah. After following your advice to delete C: the install went as I would expect.

Quite liking 7. It looks good and it's snappy & responsive. Then again, I never had any real dislikes of Windows before I started using OSX.

Danke for all responses.

Good stuff. I'm just loving the fact that I could plug in a LaserJet 4L to my work laptop and it went and got the driver. Does it for most stuff. Very useful!

The only issue that gets on my breasts when switching between Windows and OSX is that the window controls are on opposite sides.

EDIT: I know what you mean about drivers. Windows is its own worst enemy at times (when it sucks) but a friend to itself at others. It's more complex than OSX because it has to deal with a MUCH wider range of hardware.

Aye. I downloaded a game for Jain's Macbook the other day from the Apple site and on the hardware requirements it said "Any Mac released in the last 7 years".

Imagine the same for PCs.... ;)
