Got a laptop with Windows 7 home on it.
Need to upgrade to premium so I can run XP on it.

Paid for the upgrade on Microsofts site but it keeps being 'unsuccessful'. And then they want to charge me £46 for support!!

Anyone got any ideas?!

gave me an upgrade key in an email, then basically i just continued with the steps after payment to upgrade.

it runs for a few minutes, then says it was unsuccessful and try again later.

Spoonie, yeah that's what I mean.

I'm currently on Premium, I'm upgrading to Proffesional to allow the XP being run, but it won't work for some reason.

Fresh install?

I know nothing about torrents either, how do they work?!

Why is nothing easy, I paid for the bloody thing to try and just make it simple and easy!

The following command can be used to upgrade, not sure if thats what you are doing?

C:\> DISM /online /Set-Edition:professional /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

where do i type that spoon, in 'run'??

I was following the steps on the website to upgrade, then now when it stops i just go to 'windows anytime upgrade' and it starts automatically but never finishes!

tired the above in with no spaces, came back with:

elevated permissions are required to run dism. use an elevated command prompt to complete these tasks.

any ideas now?!

(thanks for the help by the way!)

Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories then Right Click 'Command Prompt' and choose 'Run as Administrator'. That will elevate the command prompt.

I did something similar on the site.

Basically googled running XP on W7, then it scanned it and said I need to be 'Professional' to be able to run XP, so paid to upgrade etc, then had the above problems.
This Laptop has been W7 from birth not previously updated.

You should have a log file called update.log under here:

C:\Users\<your logon>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Anytime Upgrade\

Starts like this:

Info WAU WindowsAnytimeUpgradeUI.exe started
Info WAU An internet connection is available.
Info WAU Found existing product key in registry. WAU is advancing straight to the verification page.

Might have an error like this:

Error WAU DoTransmogrify failed due to error 0x800xxxxx.

Can you check that?

Found that, they all say 'info' but then the first error is 'failed to set system restore point due to error 0x80070422'

Then there are a lot of errors after that too.....

I can copy and paste if needed?

Also, in that folder there is another text file named Upgrade_dism - assuming that was me trying the manual way?

All info's, then there's a warning: failed to load the provider then a load of junk after it!

Are system restore points enabled on you machine? If you check System from the Control Panel you will See 'System Protection'

protection settings are enabled for C drive, but not for HP_RECOVERY, that a problem?

should I create a new restore point?

Says I've successfully just done a system restore.

Try the upgrade again?

Does the HP_RECOVERY volume have a drive letter?

EDIT: Going to head off home soon, its possible that te upgrade needs to do something with that volume (It may be drive D:\) and can't take a recovery point. If you can enable system recovery on that then try again it may work.
