Winter Tyre Debate 4 or 2??

if you cant afford 4 winter tyres is there any gain to be had from just getting two?

will two offer and improvement over 4 summer tyres?

I am not too sure about 2 , but in the uk I dont see any need for winter tyres unless I live in Scotland

I mean if the snow was really harsh would you not be sensible and not use your car ?

advantage is that if you 2 sets of wheels, least you wont wreck your summer tyres skidding on the ice!

Just 1 set of wheels? I wouldnt bother!

i like driving in snow and need to get to work.

two winter tyres for the front must make some improvement

With two on the front you can still move on snow and ice. However, the back will break away suddenly as the front will give you a false sense of grip. Braking will be improved a little but the ABS will still kick in on the back wheels on ice etc.

putting snow tyres on the driving wheels makes a huge difference, only thing you have to watch is the back end will wanna step out easy in snow, but if your driving that fast on snow you want your head looking at.

agreed

the plan is for winter tyres on snow and ice, but dont think ill be doing any racing on snow or ice.

ok two tyres it is then, maybe next year when i have some money ill get another two

good question to be fair (the 2 or 4 one)

as someone asked earlier on here could you put the two tyres on opposite sides and ends or would that be unthinkable?

i did a bit of light searching before making this thread and couldnt see much on the topic of 2 or 4

The massive unbalance may be more dangerous than just running normal tyres.

Lol at the front-left, right-rear idea. :)

Honestly sounds like a disaster waiting to wrap itself around a tree to me. If all 4 tyres are the same (all summer/all winter) you'd be much better than 2 each. Fronts grip, rear's do not, and when you hit the brakes the rears might lock or let go at any time.

Do not want.

0% credit card / early Xmas present from the 'rents (assuming you're not in your 80s :rasp:) and get 4 tyres, or don't bother.

Driving in winter on "summer" tyres has never been a problem for me, in the Scoob or any previous hot hatch/cold yoof mobile. Just use your brain and drive sensibly for the conditions. Nothing will save you from black ice anyway...

Not trying to teach you to suck eggs, but it really just does not sound like a good idea at all.

im not worried worried about the winter, ive been driving for ten years and never crashed or had any real issues.

just got some money left from an insurance payout so thought it was worth putting back into the car

what are the real cheap winter tyres like? better than summer tyres in the cold?

Four cheap winter tyres have got to be better than summer tyres, in winter, surely ?

As everyone and their wife appear to have winter wheels this year, I'm assuming it'll be a BBQ on Christmas Day in an unseasonably warm December.

ok cheers

hahah yeah probably wont get a single drop of snow. still leave the tyres will be good when its -3 etc...

seriously, just get on ebay.

I saw 4 15" wheels, with winter tyres go for £250.

Tyres had little wear, true the wheels were ex-micra but it's a 'cheap' solution

to be fair im a little clueless when it comes to tyre/wheels sizes and what fits and what doesnt

  Listerine & Poledo
I know your pain.

THe only reason I haven't snapped up several winter tyre bargains is because I dont want to wind up with a set of rims that dont fit!
