Wireless Network help

  BMW 118d
At the moment at my parents house we have a Netgear DG834G hooked up to a WPN802 Range Max access point. Started off with just the DG but struggled with range, so added the WPN which helped a bit. I have an office in an outbuilding and again range/speed was a problem so bought a Belkin Universal Repeater. This works ok (had a few problems to begin with, but seems to be working at the moment).

Some areas are still struggling with signal, and don't really want loads of repeaters all over the place. Any way of increasing range? Are omni-directional antennae any good? How do they work? Do you simply run a cable from the antenna to the aerial connection on the router? Bearing in mind the house is about 250 years old, so walls are thick, and the building is listed so can't go installing anything huge on the ouside, although may be able to hide an antenna in the valley on the roof.

Any other ways of increasing range?

Unfortunately can't use the above as we have 3 phase electricity, and the areas that cannot get signal are on a different electric meter.
