wireless router stuff question

i just changed my normal adsl modem to a router modem that plugs into the back of my ethernet port on my pc. its also wireless so sends to a computer upstairs too.

now if the upstairs computer gets and virus's etc, does that mean mine will also get em? i.e any problems with that pc can be sent to mine?

erm , dpends on the virus , you could if u send files between the 2, but shouldnt have a problem if its just internet use ,

Just use a virus checker n firewall n u shouldnt see any problems

well it seems ever since its been fitted my msn takes ages to log in. everything else is ok tho. but i know the pc upstairs was having msn problems too before hand. if i put my old modem back in it logs in fast and fine again?

Could be a multitude of things - Bad signal/connectivity/wrongly configured.

What are the general connection speed like? Can you do some pings and tracerts to some sites like bbc.co.uk and paste in the reports.

i'd love to know what you just said.. all i read then was - gkjfkjgfhbfkjkjhgfkjhfgjhgkjhsdghhdkjhgkjshghghkjshghkjshghsgbvkjhgfkjhg

start-->run-->cmd.exe <enter>

In the cmd prompt type:

ping www.bbc.co.uk > ping.txt

It will display some results, which are ping times. Paste them here, it will save them too C:\Ping.txt by default.

You can do the same with tracert command:

tracert www.bbc.co.uk > trace.txt

See what it says :)

Pinging www.bbc.net.uk [212.58.224.114] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 212.58.224.114: bytes=32 time=25ms TTL=249

Reply from 212.58.224.114: bytes=32 time=26ms TTL=249

Ping statistics for 212.58.224.114:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

That be the MTU. But it may not have to be set, depends on your ISP.

Thomas, those pings are fine.

Thomas they're fine lad, anything below 30 for each hop is fine. But try a tracert too, will show you the route your connection takes to various sites.

Ben, if you type:

tracert www.bbc.co.uk > ole.txt

Then search under all files and folders for "ole.txt" it WILL find the document, as indeed frequently it will place it in temp files or some other pointless location which can prove hard to find.

Tracing route to www.bbc.net.uk [212.58.224.55]

over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.1.1

2 23 ms 21 ms 21 ms ndoltd2-hg3.ilford.broadband.bt.net [217.41.200.74]

3 24 ms 24 ms 23 ms 217.41.200.34

4 25 ms 23 ms 25 ms 217.41.200.110

5 27 ms 25 ms * thn1-gi0-3-3.namesco.net [195.7.254.2]

6 24 ms 24 ms 24 ms rt-lonap-a.thdo.bbc.co.uk [193.203.5.90]

7 26 ms 25 ms 25 ms 212.58.238.153

8 25 ms 26 ms 26 ms www9.thdo.bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.55]

Trace complete.

^^^ what does all that mean?

what provider you with and what wireless router are you using, check here http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks/MTU as it def sounds like the settings in the routers config are set wrong, just need to change the mtu size, should be 1500, but some providers use different sizes like aol for example who use 1400.

I had same prob and couldnt get on msn, and some sites didnt work, i have a netgear router and on aol.

Might wanna look here as well http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n100603.asp

Good luck
