Would you go for a 172/182 or a mint Williams with change for your pocket?

Mint 172.

But, I thought you were selling the 172 for more room/practicality etc?

172/182. Williams look old and dated, and half are probably riddled with rust

I think the Williams still has its iconic looks and therefore steers away from dated looks. They are always worth a second look when you see one, IMO.

I've had two Clio Williams 3's and a 182. Love the look of them both, in their own ways.

If your not doing big miles I think a Williams is the best choice. The 172 is just too boring but does eat up miles quite nicely and has very good mpg.

Mint Williams, you won't lose money maybe make a few quid if you can keep the mileage down.

I definetily wouldn't get a williams, if you're that way inclined get a cup like me, nice and raw without being daft.

Personally, I'd save a little more cash and buy a civic type R!

so much more fun, you can chuck em sideways and leave them there for an age (i'm an instructor so shutuperyourface! ;):rasp:)

i miss my old cup racer :(

On a track, maybe, but on the road the cup is a better option as it will leave it standing!

Scutch what's the plan ? I'm confused dude. Your asking which would we go for, for 5k, but you have a 172 already yet you want a 182 or a willy ?
I'd go with sticking with the car you know tbh (the silver 172) plus you have the WR1 up for sale too ?

Depending on priorities i'd have the 172 for everyday use but the Williams for a weekend toy. Reliability is an issue on MK1's

I had a few races with 172 Cup's in the Williams and mine was quicker. This was two different Cup's as well on two different occassions. On the first I was also 2 up and he was on his own. I at the time had spare out and a decat so poss 950kg's and 155 bhp....

The problem with 172's is despite their name they really are pushing out 160's but the Williams blocks usually under read slightly.

150 bhp vs 165 bhp isn't much to write home about. Williams is also kerb weight 980 not sure about the 172 cup .... 1050? Not alot of difference there. The only difference I have found between owning a 172 and a Williams is the speed from 80+.

I am biased in the sense the Williams is a better drivers car so cannot really compare objectively the enjoyment of driving .... plus I haven't owned a 172 Cup but as said performance difference is neglible - unless my some minor miracle the Cup is much quicker than standard 172's.

Never can understand why people say the Williams' are slow compared to mk2's in general either as at the last santa pod meet of mk1's vs mk2's, mk2's didnt win much at all.

Selective reasoning I think - either that or my Williams is a good un'.

williams can do high 13sec, low 14sec 1/4mile, cups struggle to do low 14's

and the gearbox is the same as the 172/182, just a slight ratio difference ;)

I suppose that's hit the nail on the head really, it depends what power you're really running at as they vary so much.

I've had a play with a williams and pulled significantly so it's swings and roundabouts really. I never stated williams were slow, I just stated in the real world the cup would be quicker (due to past experiences!) but by the sounds of it they're pretty equal when it comes to performance.

It all depends what you want sitting in the drive really, I went for the cup as the williams are looking very dated now and I wouldn't trust the reliability (they may be fine, but they really are getting on).

  53 Clio's & counting
^^ this is true, my old willy engined hybrid used to run 14 sec dead, though at one day at pod a chap with a williams asked me what i had done to mine as he couldnt get under 15.5, again its back to driver skill and car condition,

NO CHANCE!!

i went from a 172 cup to a willy and my willy destroys the cup in just about every way possible.

granted its not as comfy on long journeys or as easy to drive, but handling wise is MUCH better, and quicker in a straight line too.

you feel so much more in control in a williams, you can feel what the car is doing 100%, the cup was always a bit 'turn and hope' imo.

  Whichever has fuel
Having owned every model, i'd get a williams, unless you're planning on usin it everyday then i'd get a 182.

If its just a toy to be enjoyed though, gotta be Williams everytime. I miss mine loads!!

I very nearly bought a Williams instead of the MX5. Might get one next year for a few months. Love the look tbh, interior is obviously going to be a let down, but from the outside they look great.

i dont think the interior is that bad tbh, i know it looks dated, but it has this really nice charm to it, its something you warm to.

Sounds like you've made your mind up on a Willy?

speak to the williams owners, you'll be in for a surprise!

...and I'm sure if you speak to Cup owners they'll say Cup is better........
