A program called 'Switch' on the mac will make a mp3 in to most formats except for the older retro Amiga, C64 etc and vice versa, it's great and it's freeware.
In itunes, and you'll have to forgive me as I dont have any wma files to check but if you highlight the track in itunes go to Advanced > Convert selection to mp3. that might work.

cant seem to do it that way in itunes. its converts them to aac when i open it in itunes but i cant see an option to convert to mp3

iTunes can do this!

Just load all the wma's in, iTunes will make them into their own format AAC or whatever. Then all you do is select all the songs, right click and 'Convert selection to mp3'.

itunes do it this way

The secret is in how your preferences are set:
Edit>Preferences>Advanced>Importing

You need to set "Import using" to MP3

However you can't convert purchased music. The only way to do that is to burn it to an AUDIO CD and then re-import it as MP3.
