Working out what size amp for subs?

How do you go about this I've heard numerous things I want this settled lol

Say you have 2 x 12" 1600W subs what size amp should be used?

Double the W so a 3200W amp or half it at 1600W or the minimum that the sub can take?

Cheers

Well you'd need a big amp, or even two to power that setup I believe.
And it depends what the RMS of the subs are not the peak power. People get draw in by the big power of the subs but that figure 9/10 is bullshit.

it's the total. i had 2x400w subs and a 1000w amp driving them

but only ever compare RMS values all other values are meaning less

Root Mean Squared

it's a value that has set way of being worked out to tell you power output that all manufactures use

what subs are they are you need to get alot of things right.

as the voice coil resistance will alter things alot.

max RMS input power each sub can handle (as i doubt 1600w is RMS)

The 1200w is the peak power of the sub, depending on the sub normal seems to be around 600w RMS from what I can remember, but if I was you, i'd buy quality not the crap you can buy at Halfrauds.

i'm going to take a punt and say sony xplod subs

I have had a few budget ones, like JVC, Pioneer and Alpine, and the Alpine one was brilliant, it was only about £70 boxed and being run by an Alpine amp, but it sounded good. But my mate had a twin vibe 12'' setup with a amp built in, and it sounded gash, like it was too much in a small car. Just opinions though isn't it?

EDIT: His best bet would be to buy something like this;

or simular depending on his budget.
