Would you buy a cheap 172 that needs service and cambelt doing?

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
Yeah that's what I will aiming for if its in good condition.

Just got a quote from Rentech for £700-750 for 72k full service and cambelt. Wouldn't be able to book it in for a while so would mean watching it on the drive for 2weeks as I wont be driving it until cambelt is changed and a day off work but should be worth it. Oh yeah and a day in Portsmouth

  Monaco RS Clio 172
oh my word.. day in portsmouth. I spent 7 hours walking around the town, eating breakfast, 2 lunches, buying random shite, sitting in the tescos cafe reading the nuts magazine over a coffee for 2 hours (slow reading on purpose ftw lol), and still I got back early.

it was worth it for what I saved and peace of mind knowing they do a first class job, but f00k mine, it was a long day lol

window shopping is ok for an hour. 7 is excessive tbh.

take someone with you is my advice. neither my girlfriend, nor any of my friends could get the day off from work, so I was a larry, making it 10x worse.

Whereabouts are you based mate? If you can get up to Cheshire, Birchdown will save you £hundreds off that quote!

In the meantime I'd HPi that car - if it's clean, get it bought...

It's v competitively priced (ph1 money!) so if you don't buy it quick, someone else will!!

Good luck! :)

Id take the car to birchdown or angelworks mate. Be worth the drive up, only be an extra hour or so.

Pm'd.

Thought you were mad for the PH1 after that evening out with me an Ivan? Told you Ph2's are the daddys  , you wanna see mine go now, Pulled over 4 car lengths on a PH1 on the A30 :approve:

Just had a look at the add, seems very cheap considering its a Trade sale:S , by all mean go check it out if its local! & god dont let temptation get to you driving it about with the cambelt, its very, very messy when they go on a Clio sport :dead:

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
Hopefully will be looking at it tomo with the buyes guide printed off. Going to be extra thorough since its the first RS I'll have viewed to buy.

Yeah it does seem cheap, so not getting my hopes up but if its good, I'll be putting in an offer. Starting at £2700 sound reasonable? TBH for £3k I'd be happy but no harm in trying to save a bit!

Pep, looking into it.

James, I was all for the ph1 but prices have dropped a lot for ph2s in the last 4 months, and its hard finding a good ph1 on not too high miles thats not too far away. So at similar prices theph2 seems a v.good option. Plus Flame Red is 2nd best colour! (Cups win of course  )

Ph2's are my fav shape, few mods & it will look lush mate  , hope the viewing goes well! drop me a pm if you need any info mate ;)

Just left you a link above lol, If your running a just a de-cat then i hope mine is quicker, mine "feels" quicker than a cup, but i was only a passenger in the cup

Cheers James. I'm fingers crossed about it atm. Too much excitement as well atm as just about to unbox my PS3 :D

Would prefer someone more local to Berkshire, Middlesex side for service and cambelt but if at the end of the day I have to drive further to get a proper job, then no questions about it. I definitely wont be driving it until its sorted, I will just wash it until its ready.

Has anyone ever heard of Boxer Motor Co. in Maidenhead?

http://www.boxermotor.co.uk/index.html

Edit. K-TEC any good for cambelts and servicing?

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
Ivan, that's fantastic, even better that you know him personally as well.

I'd very much appreciate you having a word if I get this RS, or indeed another RS.

Are his sevice prices good as well?

I'm so happy to find a good specialist nearby! Muchos thanks Ivan!

i highly recommed peter at boxer...his work is outstanding and his prices are fantastic...ive always take my renaults to him...5gt turbo,21 turbo, and the 172 and he knows his stuff and doesnt take forever to get it done...let me know when you get the car and what you need doing and i will pop in and see him....hes fitting my decat for £25

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
Thanks Ivan. Will find out tomorrow i guess. But i'll definitely be getting an 172 at some point soon so will most likely use him when in need of a garage.

Well, I saw it today.

Bad points:
  • Front bumper looks like it needs a respray -paint peeling and scratches
  • SERV light was on, No service history for 1st two yrs
  • Incomplete V5 I think - only the 1st page, shouldn't there be 2?
  • The MOT expiring 2006 (only 3 in pack) had "2002" in section under 'estimate of last driven' - never noticed that section before. Was old style MOT.
  • Biting point was very heavy high, almost at the top so guessing clutch needs doing soon as well.
  • Seat a lil warn
  • Vin numbers hard to read, stickered over and no oval sticker thing on drivers door.
  • Front lights badly scratched, need that VXR detailing guys help ;)
  • Crap brakes, felt like casual braking on my 1.4 when pedal was fully depressed, "but they stop" he said. Need doing soon IMO.
Good points:
  • No engine movement, even when lifting off on high revs
  • Exhaust seemed very stable
  • Acceleration was awesome, felt that 5k kick. TC definitely working
  • Gearbox seemed very smooth! Was a bit of a shocker.
  • Everything inside seemed to work
  • Rest of paintwork and wheels seemed very good condition.
Think I've definitely been won over by the ph2 for nice interior. Didn't get a chance to test the handling fully as was a bit busy on the roads, but floored it good. Awesome when it gets going! I'm defo be looking out for a Flamer as well, colour was beautiful.

I'll be honest mate, not really feeling Black 172s, but it looks great on 182 wheel and lowered on Sportlines, and no work need doing but brakes is it? Will keep it mind, maybe a viewing soon.

Thought there would be alot more probs than that for £3k, but if your gut says it aint right, walk away mate, there are so many around now, the clutch on 172's are nasty any way, stiff & high bitting point, if i'm ever asked what i dis-like about the clio the most its the clutch :dead:

Thing that would put me off is if there is bad chassis no.s & no MOT & bad brakes it could fail on both, when you go for a re-take, which wouldnt be cheap... i wouldnt pay more than £2,300, as if all fails you could get shot for parts

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
He said it had a new MOT, although I never actually saw it, I wasn't convinced enough after the test drive to bother him for it.

Brakes were shocking compared to my little ones, I was braking from around 40 to 10 and I swear I could have done 80-20 in the same distance in my 1.4.

I was expecting the clutch to be hard, so am ok with that and I know clios are very high, but this was literally just as you push it down, will test drive a few more 172s to get a feel for this.

I don't know loads and loads about cars but my estimate was cambelt and service straight away and brakes and clutch within a year, plus the front bumper respray to get it looking good again. That's way too much work even for £3k IMO so will hold out until I see something good. For £2300, it'd be spot on, considering what needs doing.

Fortunately, I'm selling my car to my sister so no pressures on that point, esp as she wont be driving until December so plenty of time to keep looking and saving.

In that case keep looking mate, standard brakes should be right up there with the handling, drove my old 1.2 saturday...   now thats what you call scary brakes & slow.. 190bhp ish - 60bhp lol.. should find a nice 172 on here in all good order for around £4k

  M2 Competition
The clutch thing is normal dude.

If it looks iffy walk away though, not worth the risk. To be fair it is a 3k ph2... i think james got very lucky with his.

i think james got very lucky with his.

Indeed  , right place, right time & cash wating & of course a bit of hagling lol

I upset people when i tell them how much i pay'd for mine so i'm not saying no more lol

Funily enough i went to veiw this car today, i live an Aylesbury so its only 30 mins away from h-wyc were the car is located.... I liked it alot but as mentioned the front end had a big scratch low down on the front bumper & had some stone chip marks , 1 of the alloys was marked but on the hole it really seemed a nice car, i didnt test drive it , (wish i had now) Keep thinking about it lol really like the colour etc but as said the service light on the dash is on & cambelt will need doing .....

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
Dan, is the clutch a lot higher than an non-RS? Or could it be mine is more worn so it's lower?

I'm all confused about whether clutch is higher or lower when worn :S

Yeah James, was almost too lucky with his bargain find lol

Rossco22, service light is on as its not been serviced in around 15k! That's why I was thinking a 72k service would be best. If just that and cambelt need doing, I think I might have taken it. But I CBA wasting time to get bumper resprayed and then more money on brakes.

Plus I was not impressed by the guy, when I told him a specialist would cost £450ish for cambelt as its a specialist job he replied "nah nah, my mate can do it much cheaper" :S also, just found he was a bit rude, on the phone whilst I was viewing and didn't offer any details about the car until asked. I think he's waiting for a quick sale to someone who wont notice what works needs to be done.

And service light means there's a problem, not that it needs servicing!!!!!!!!

 Does it? I thought it was one of those things that needs resetting when a service is done?

Is only way to find out through fault finder software?

Staying well clear anyway.

PS. Isn't your flamer a ph1?

Yeah a ph1. They don't have variable servicing, so the light only comes on if theres a problem, IIRC another warning light should also be on, so possible someone's removed a bulb to hide the problem? I'd walk away, plenty of decent cars about.

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
Cheers Warren, I'm going to keep looking out everyday.

MillerLight, sounded great until you said Scotland lol that's a tad too far away for me lol

Yer as you say the guy wasnt exactly forth coming with info on the car, he hardly said anything unless he was asked an was also on the phone half the time, the set up didnt give me much faith in the car either as there were smashed up cars in the back of the unit, i was half expecting it to be a crash repaired car but after looking around it i coundnt see any signs of fresh paint/repair etc...

I phoned a renault specialist earlyer just to check on serviceing prices an they wanted £450 to do the cambelt inc the kit & tensioner/rollers etc, then they advised that i changed the alternator belt along with the brackets? at the same time £100, a 70k service inc in car filter ,oil, plugs, air filter etc was £388 then if the brakes needed attention too ..??

I too have given up on this car now seems far to much hassel & what looked to be a bit of a bargin really isnt...
