Would you say a clutch change is a specialist only job??

  RB FF 182
Just been quoted £496.44 to fit (NOT SUPPLY) a new clutch to my 172 by a local specialist.

The guy said it's a pretty big job and that he has people in all the time who've gone to a cheaper garage and are having issues with the work...

Opinions please...

BTM priced my £450 and i've had another price for £255 fitted, it's around 6-7 hours labour!

My jaw nearly touched the floor when he quoted. I mean, I've never had a clutch change done before so didn't know what to expect but... really?! Haha

Rough prices anyone?

Not too bad of a job... I've done 3 gearbox / clutch changes on 172's... 6hrs seems about right, if you know what your doing! :)

Clutch kit is around £90 - £100 for a Valeo

Gear oil £25 (please use decent and the correct grade oil!!)

you may well find other parts need replacing along the way (crank seal, gearbox mount/s) etc. but they are not all that costly.

May shop around...

The quote included all labour, and some decent Elf gearbox oil. It'd be the correct stuff they do know what they're doing. Theyre just a little pricey sometimes... But I guess I'm paying for their expertise!

Only other person I trust locally is Fred so may give him a call later.

If it is the correct ELF grade oil from Renault that is £50 - £60 alone iirc...

Yeah he said if I was happy with the gearbox oil that's currently in it would nock £48 off the price. It needs changing though to be honest.

He's changing my mounts on Friday so he's gonna have a drive and let me know what he thinks of the clutch, I'm hoping I'm just getting paranoid. As far as I'm aware it is the original clutch, and the car has covered nearly 80k so I guess it's due soon....??

Plenty of 172's knock on for 130k on standard clutches.

All depends how they've been treated, but IMO, it's the strongest part of the car!

I changed my 172 clutch at 100,000 miles IIRC... and it still had plenty of friction material, it was the release bearing that caused me to go in and change the kit.

All down to how they are used (as Mr. Budgie points out ;) x)

Unless the clutch is slipping, grinding cause there is no friction material left or the release bearing has collapsed then it wont need changing. Get your moneys worth out of the one you have if there are no signs of failure.

Yep. My 130k 172 just had a clutch change, only because I had the box re-conned, and it makes sense to also change the clutch.

the clutch itself was still spot on mind.

Mines not to bad. I'll just wait til it's actually dead I think. Haha

It slips, rarely and sometimes it's hard to select second. Ive noticed bite point move quite alot higher over last few weeks.

Due to cost/hastle I'll just wait. Haha

just out of interest.

may be in line for a new 3rd gear (and, thus, a new box).

how much graft is slotting in a new box & clutch? While at it, is it worthwhile looking for a lighter flywheel?

ball-park prices would be nive, thanks

As said, approx £450-500 for clutch change.

Changing the box over would be no extra.

Flywheel, I'd guess an extra hour's labour plus the cost of the part.

I did mine myself. Clutch release bearing collapsed at 108K on my phase 1. I was quoted £250 by Mr Clutch in Northampton, they use a relined clutch which in this day and age is absolutely mental. Other quotes were upto £1000........

I opted to do it myself and lifted the motor out complete with the box on..... didnt fancy trying to lift a heavy box back through the wheel arch and was concerned about removing the subframe - would it line up again ?

Sounds excessive but did other work at the same time, auxiliary belt and drip from the box...

Plus it was fun :)

I stuck in some valvoline box oil in ( must use grade for Renault and Peugeot boxes ) and fitted a Valeo clutch from eurocarparts ( £100 from memory ).

Impossible to re-align the subframe incorrectly.

It can only bolt to the car in one place and the rear mounts have locating bumps.

I paid £90 for a lightened clutch.. It was balanced with the whole clutch assembly.

It's only an extra 10 minutes (7 bolts) to change the flywheel.

PMSL. I eat clutch changes for breakfast.

Do 'em cheap, too!

PMSL Budgie, do you use that old wooden spirit level and a rope?? you know thats how wee removed the engine that day when i cam for the shell ;)

I still cant belive we used your grandads airloom spirit level ;)

I still maintain that a 4ft length of Scaffolding pole is the perfect engine crane!

They don't make spirit levels like that anymore, so I'm told.

I was also concerned with undoing the subframe as i had heard horror stories of the clips coming off the back of the captive nuts inside the chassis. So took the motor out the top. 3 hrs first time didnt think that was too bad .....
