I'd walk away from your "Mechanic".

Rentech used Forte Engine Flush and kept the car on idle for 30 mins. Brilliant stuff. Not sure about the Halfords stuff though.

Forte stuff is spot on. I'm very hesitant about using a flush on VERY neglected engines. It's good when an oil change has been left late and the oil is very dirty, but if there's a lot of dirt and carbon in there you'll loosen that and it can potentially do more damage than good. A few oil changes in a short space of time is more sensible

Dont use a flush at all! They tend to do more harm then good as they are kerosene or paraffin based and can be to harsh. And of course you will never get it all out so it just starts to break down your new fresh oil.

Just use decent quality oil and regular changes and all will be as clean as it needs to be. Oil going black is a good thing, just means its doing one of its jobs of cleaning.
