If it's one of the earlier models buy a new one... they keep making them quieter by putting better DVD drives in them. Or wait for them to start using the 65nm process for making the processors which will mean they produce less heat and wont need as powerful fans - think they're coming around later this year and the Elite may use them

this isnt really true they just put in what ever they have laying around at the time and also depends where the xbox was made there is no real way to make sure a new one is quieter other than to swap out fans your self

It's loud because of dust build up.

Cleaning Steps:

1) Unplug your xbox (otherwise it will go bang).
2) Add some washing up liquid to a bowl of warm water.
3) Gently sponge your xbox down, make sure that water gets into the ventilation holes, otherwise the inside won't get clean.
4) Towel it dry and place in a microwave for approx 30 seconds to dry it thoroughly.
5) Plug it in and turn on! Guaranteed to be a hell of a lot quieter.

Gentle tapping of a hammer should fix it. If not then increase the strengh of you hammer blows.

If you have a samsung drive flash it. The burnt games hardly make the Xbox drive spin up. Makes it VERY quiet
