Xbox not reading discs

The laser was replaced sometime this year, then it started being temperamental and not reading discs.

i googled it and found that tapping the top while the disc is reading gets it to work.

last night I think it had enough and I was tapping it/hitting it/kicking it in the dick but nothing was working.

so today I took it apart, wiped the laser, got rid of all the dust from the laser surround and that's made it read discs with a few taps again.

my question is; is it new laser/reader time again or is there another problem that I don't know of?

Think I'm gonna get a new one in dec but I thought I'd ask before spending :)

Hmm strange one the laser shouldn't need replacing so soon :/ could be something to do with the drive possibly? I replaced the laser in mine the other week, bit of a ballache put it back together and it wouldn't read them at all, so i just got a new drive in the end!

http://team-xecuter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61768 might be worth giving that a try, helped mine last a bit longer before it died lol

Yeah its the whole unit, although its not as simple as just taking the old one out and new one in :/ needs to be coded to your console. So you can either flash your old drive key to the new drive or just swap the drive motherboard over which is what I did(a lot easier!).

If you can install the games to the hard drive when you get it working, then that might help a little? I always install my games as it runs quicker and quieter.

Depends which drive you have really. Iv got a LiteOn and that was pretty simple, there are 5 wires (I think) that were soldered but I cut them in the middle and twisted them together with the new drive couldnt be arsed to solder either. Was a proper bodge job lol got sick of looking at the thing so I just put it together, been working fine since though.

Suppose thats a last resort if you cant get it working with other methods.

its not the console. the problem is the magnet that hold the disc in place (it get dis-lodged and stuck) or a loose connection. Both can be repaired by replacing the drive with a working one of the same type. You then need to enter the maintenance menu as follows (copied from another site):

  1. Locate the System section of the Xbox 360 Dashboard.
  2. Select Memory, and then press the Y button to view the device options screen.
  1. On the Xbox 360 controller, press the following items in this sequence:
  2. X button
  • X button
  • Left bumper
  • Right bumper
  • X button
  • X button
  1. When you are prompted to confirm system maintenance, press the A button to select Yes.
You can also use the above to troubleshoot why its not reading if its not a hardware fault.

I had this with my Xbox 360, had 2 new lasers and it kept doing it. Started doing it occasionally after 9-12months as well. Got told by the company that did my lasers that it was probably terminal, so got the newer shape 360 and never had a problem. So to me it sounds terminal.
