XP - 21 updates ! WTF!

  Golf Mk6 Oil Burner
I have just had an automatic update run with 21 updates ! Granted some of them are for office but its just ridiculous.

How can MS expect anyone to buy Vista when 5 years down the line XP is still getting security updates !?!?!?

"more holes than a sieve" i think the expression is .......

The updates fix previous updates, there was 3 (that I know of) exploits which enables a user to perform a DoS on a localhost, Thats still there :D and I have a exploit that gains root. thats still there to, ... so expect more updates :D

There is nothing wrong with a load of update (shock horror ?? defending bill ?) the problem lies when the updates are to fix previous updates that either broke or didnt fix the problem in the first place.

Think of updates as a good thing, but always think worst case scenario.. eg. if I install this will my system fubar ?

there are always going to be new updates regardless....so many people try and hack windows in one way or another that they are always gona find ways in somewhow.

vista seemed a lot more secure than xp as standard, but the actual OS was crap IMO. i have a 3ghz machine with 1gb of ram at the mo and it was dog slow!

All you need is a good firewall and good AV protection and you wont have any bother. in 3 years of my current xp build iv not had a single problem.

I honestly cant think of anything more i would need or want to do that windows xp doesnt allow me to do.

i do loads of web development for example, and there is everything i could ever need available for me to do it exactly as i want.

people always jump on the xp is shite badwagon, probably because their pc is fuked full of spam, trojans, virus etc because they cant or dont choose to look after their pc's!

would you leave your car just locked up at night with no alarm or immobilisor on it, or leave you home with just the front door locked and no other locks, deadlocks, alarm, baseball bat by the bed (ok maybe a bit far but you get the picture)?

same goes for the comp, if you want a secure pc then secure the fuker yourself, dont rely on the bare minimum that every hacker in the world is trying to hack in order to steal your bank details and fuk you over with fraud or identity theft etc!!

You shouldnt have to rely on third party products in order to make it usable..

if you go out and buy a microwave.. should you have to buy an extra product to stop the harmfull radiation comming out ? or should it come with it ?

Not every person it technically orientated enough to know how to protect their systems.. they shouldnt have to spend time/money on products to fix problems with the product they just bought.

XP is shite.. fact.

its not s**t tho, i look after 300 xp built machines and we have no problems with them at all. they have ad-hoc systems running on them that need to be as reliable as possible, and they generally are (unless one of the unix bits of hardware fails like today)

not every person is technically orientated no, but id like to see a non techy try and use any other kind of OS that will do what they want and be secure out of the box with no need to add any updates or additional firewalls/AV etc.(especially linux, iv had 4 goes with it and its only worked twice, and both times I couldnt do fek all with it as i didnt know any command promp stuff)

its common sense. you should be concerned about security for everything in life, including your computer.

Never had a problem with XP either at home or work, It allows me to do what I need to do and have NEVER had a security issue, so it couldn't do any more for me personally

In my experience the only people that have experienced problems (at home, outside work) are those that are too lapse, don't apply updates, don't run anti spyware, virus and trojan apps, don't keep their system tidy and surf crap websites, download demos and generally don't apply any logic train of thought and in lamens terms dont know their arse from their elbow
True that Linux, Unix and TMOS are more secure, but for home use who gives a damn
Considering that XP has to interface with such a vast ammount of different hardware and other software, and for the masses that are Joe Public with varying levels of IT/PC knowledge, it does a good job imo

Its not hard to protect your system, you can go to PC World and buy McAfee 2007 (which does pretty much everything you need and updates every day) or Norton for around £30.

windows xp doesnt create the virus's though, which a microwave does. its other users that create them, other peopple dont send radiation to you rmicrowave

would you prefer to have software with no updates ever? and pay for them if there were? so dont complain

Try ubuntu, secure out the box with built in firewall, secured services and one click updates.. didnt have to install ANY drivers for sound/video etc.. it makes XP look like an overcomplicated unsecure POS.. and that was designed for numbnuts..
