Yellow Dog Linux or Gentoo on my PS3?

ok, found the instructions but I am having problems downloading it, its 3.3gb but it keeps jsut downloading in 2 seconds so is obviously confused in some way?

i have been trying but can't do it, they keep failing after so much %, and unlike torrents or newsgroups you can't restart at the same location so i'm not doing too well.

Is there any chance of you sending me a DVD please and I can paypal you some money for your costs?

I can't think of another way of getting it as i can't find it on newsgroups.

I found 1 copy on a newsgroup but it was incomplete. PM me your details and I'll send you the dvd I created. I have the iso file on my computer but I don't think there is a good quick way of sending it to you directly.

:D at over 3gb I'm not surprised

I'm in the process of downloading all of my demos from the UK, HK and US servers again as I had to format the Ps3 for the Linux install.

This link any better for you? Maybe try install a download manager to allow you to restart at the same point it fails?
http://mirror.switch.ch/ftp/mirror/yellowdog/iso/yellowdog-5.0-phoenix-20061208-PS3.iso

I sorted him out with a different mirror a while ago, and it worked fine.. :)
He's probably gone out as it said it had quite a while to go! :p
it got to 6% and failed

problem is its an 8hr download, i#m bound to drop my connection once atr least

i was wondering whether you are able to save them to a memory stick before you format as the guides say to back it up first?

I tried to do that but when I went to restore it failed to restore by game downloads. Fortunately all of my game saves restored perfectly :) Account settings are not lost during the format.

Super Rub A Dub looks like a fun mini game :D A trailer for it is on the US servers. Looks like it's based on the tech demo Sony showcased around 2 years ago.

I downloaded Flow today, it's fun but not sure what the point is.

I've managed to set up networking with my iMac so hopefully I can stream my media more easily rather than having to write it to a portable HDD.

Dave did you sort out a copy of YDL? If not let me know and I'll mail you one.

I did that long ago when I owned my XP PC, got a iMac now and love the OS so no need for Linux :)

As a media player my PS3 is now brilliant. :) VLC installed and playing all my downloaded material on my LCD TV perfectly.

Does this mean you can watch DIVX/Xvid files on your PS3 now???

On widescreen using a 720p or 1080i HDMI connection. Of course most of the downloads I choose are no longer HD.

Ooops meant to add this to the previous post.

Dave I have a pretty fast Torrent. if you want it let me know and will email it to you tomorrow morning at work.

Send me the addy u want it sent to. Or I can send to your work address?

thanks

huh? how come they are no longer HD ? surely if you have connected to your tv in 720 or 1080i then you would benefit from watching HD materials.

i'm guessing he is talking about downloading the 350 or 700mb files which are from a HD source but not in those file sizes etc.

Yeah that's exactly what I mean. The HD downloads are all 4gb or so and I can't be bothered waiting on those downloading. The option to watch them in HD is there though.

Ah right.. thats what i do at the moment with my 360. Download the files over 700Mb files and stream them from my Media Center.
If i get the PS3, at least I can watch my Divxs without having my PC on upstairs..

Does anybody know if you can download Torrents on this Linux on a PS3 jobbie? might be able to get rid of my PC altogether then :o)

Yes there are torrent progs available for use in Linux so you should be able to do all of that. Firefox etc come preinstalled too.

right, i have my YDL on dvd now thanks to a great torrent from Chris but I have just come across another problem, apparently it doesn't support the PS3's wireless adapter yet and my router is about 15 metre away the other side of my flat so it looks like for now i'm going to have to get a cable to run when on t'internet which isn't ideal.

And I need a usb mouse and keyboard as the only ones i have at the mo are bluetooth ones.

so its not quite as easy as i thought it was going to be!

Dave does the PS3 support bluetooth keyboard/mice? Would be quite handy for web smurfing.

Sony are working with the linux developers to get working wifi, i would imagine it wont be long before bluetooth keyboards and mouse are supported aswell.

usb keyboard and mouse should just work. Only thing that might not is any extra function/multimedia keys on the keyboard and mouse.

Several people have managed to get them working Dave but the issue is they may not work during the install :(

This should be a good upgrade :)
