Yokohama A048 What Compound?

Looking for a bit of advice from people who have used these on track.

Would you recommend the medium or soft compound?

If its stripped out with little weight in the back you could run medium up front with soft on the back so you get them up to temp.

Just for trackdays, so looks like the medium will be better which is what I was thinking.

Just wanted to get a bit of advice from people who had used them on track, cheers guys.

You buying new? Fraser.J and Michaelfoz have a few for sale at very good prices IMO.

They must have changed their prices recently then. I saw them flogging a load of them at what seemed to be almost new price per mm. Nothing wrong with that but "very good price" to me is 3-4mm left and 30 quid a corner. That's about the best I've paid.

At that price your getting scrubbed tyres for less than the best RRP price available for one single tyre by quite a bit.

Who would be throwing away 3-4mm tyres in any volume, you use more tread on 2x 9 lap races on Knockhill.

A048's only come with 4.76mm new though chip.

30 quid a corner with 3-4mm left would be a steal!!

Indeed hence me saying that IME that's what I would consider to be Very good prices.
you get 3.2mm of tread to the wear markers on a set of a048, so they cost about 45 quid a mm of useable tread (or 30 if you run them till bald)
when I buy secondhand tyres I try and avoid paying more than 30 quid per mm to the wesr markers or 20 quid till bald and thats for quality trackday tyres. I've found that to be relatively easy to do.

If your driving right you do!

Minis run approx 50psi on the rear!!

It was 40psi last week.

Theres an awful lot that seem to have 2mm taken off them. So what I'm saying is to get through 3-4mm in 2x9 lap races you'd have to be going some and then a bit more than that. So if you're saying they get through 4mm in a race then they must have pit stops as they'd be slicks by the end. Which they don't.

Basically all I'm saying is I think you've plucked 3-4mm out of thin air.

40psi cold, which will be approx 50psi hot.

I don't get the rest? I never said they use 4mm in a race?

John I'm not saying they run them to a slick, they have lost too much time by that point supposedly, they are replacing them not for necessity but for 10ths of seconds.

If they do testing, qualifying and it's a 3 race weekend they might do 3 tyres in a weekend. It's expensive at the sharp end of minis.

It's stupid really but all the better for us, if someone wants to win a race they will put fresh rubber on fronts after doing maybe a front left earlier in the weekend.

some of the miglia boys used to replace every race.

Ahh mini miglia.

Yeah most of England too, another car series that love a new set of tyres, do you get MPSC's from ginetta's.

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
Yeah. Generally 40 quid a corner with loads of life left.

I prefer them to a048 or 888 plus you can swap left to right.

Nice but expensive new. They don't have a rotation?

Yeah retail is about 180 a corner new, although you can find them for around 120 normally if you take your time.
They have an inside and an outside, but no rotation, so once on a rim you can put them on any corner of the car, very useful if you are at somewhere like llandow or combe that punish the passenger front so much as you can swap it to the drivers side rear halfway through the day.

Yeah that's a benefit, saves £30-£40 in getting tyres swapped if you dint have the facility's. I know of one set available at £120 each in 205/50/15 but that is just a one off as I haven't seen much of them for less than £200.

Just sold a set of a048s with between 1.5mm to 2mm in eBay for £150 plus postage! Happy with that

Fair play, I should think you are!

Amazign that (including fitting and postage) people will spend 200 quid on a set of tyres that are not even road legal enoguh to get you home from a trackday!
