York timing.. the official answer !

heres a reply I got from York re the 13 sec run.

Bloody good of them to reply so fast too!.. nice one..

From that it seems like litter or alteration of light level is the most possible cause.

At least we now know the reasons for the glitches.. nothing to do with computers failing etc.

Joe.

Joe,

The timing equipment used at York is the same as that used at Santa pod. It is the TSI system.

Car R26, Well I dont remember anything funny about R26... and I tend to write these things down.

The TSI system is exceptionally good at recording times (pretty damn accurate too) however it does not automatically read the numbers (I have to do that).

If somebody has a number on the side of their car that looks like R26, it goes into the system as R26.

It would be impractical to read the hand of every driver as they approach the start line to ensure their number is the same as that on their hand, or to remember the make/model/colour of every car that runs to ensure nobody pulls a switch - especially when there are so many people running !

Sometimes cars get moved about at the last min, before I have a chance to re-enter the car numbers, I dont recall R26 being involved in one of these - but it is possible.

Only other possible issue is litter or ambient light.

As the TSI works by beams of light being broken to record the times, litter in the path of the light beam will be the same to the computer is if a car wheel was there. Thus if litter was in front of the beams on the start line, the higher reaction time but lower ET could have been recorded. The MPH are consitent (the mph are calculated at the 1/8 and 1/4 mile as there are two sets of beams at each point). It the light level became much higher then the light cells may still think they can see the light beams for long enough for them to think the car has not left the start line.

Looking at the ETs and reaction times for previous runs, if you add the reaction times to the ETs you can see the runs are pretty consistent :

Reaction

1/8th

1/8th + reaction

1/4

1/4 + Reaction

1.446

10.37

11.816

16.002

17.448

1.28

10.294

11.574

15.853

17.133

3.531

7.671

11.202

13.292

16.823

0.918

10.669

11.587

16.285

17.203

0.982

10.515

11.497

16.15

17.132

So, from this I would say that either somebody else ran as R26 (hope not), litter was in the way of the beams on the start line, or the light levels changed as the run started.

Hi.

the times above were from the RWYB day on the 6th Oct.

Please can you shed light on the 13.292 time that my friend ran as it is impossible for the car to run in that time. ? ( A std clio 172)
Is there a problem with your timing equipment as the times on that run dont make sense ? .

Many thanks

Joe

So there we have it. Good detective work Joe, hopefully we can wrap this one up now. Plus it shows that York is a top venue. Youd be lucky to ever get an answer to an email from Santa Pod...

In the meantime I better remember:

must throw litter in front of beams, must thrown litter in front of beams, must throw litter in front of beams...

Well it looks good anyway ;) but no where near as good as the 11.11 secs i got a crail  (it may have something to do with the bike i was up against ;))

Tony

Yep, Nick, absolutely.. providing I have a logical answer, I am happy.. That is quality service.

ps, try Chaff ... the stuff that aircraft use to deflect radar guided missiles..!!

if you could fire a bit 50 yds before the end.. hmmmmmmm... :)

Joe.
