My Clio 172... Sleeper

  Clio 172 2.0 16V
Hi, Pretty new to this although i am a member of French Cars Ireland.

Been a Renault head ever since i was born as we have a dealership in Ireland. This is my first Clio 172, it cost me but its a minter and is abit different than any other 172 as it has a 182 rear. ( best of both worlds )

I have much planed for her as i want to have it pushing over 200bhp, it currently has just a straight pipe from the manifold back to the backbox (sounds lovely) and is fitted with a short shifter of an unknown make.

Its sitting on Coilovers with Torinos 16" freshly refurbished with Yokohama's all round.

Here is a few pictures.

Not sure on the tints & the front vinyl..

What mods you planning for 200BHP?

Looks tidy though bud

Looks lovely, but I think the term "sleeper" must mean something different there to over here.

Here a sleeper is a car that looks a lot slower than it is, so making a 172 look like a 182 is essentially the opposite.

To be a sleeper, it has to be able to massively out perform what it looks like it could do!

I wasn't sure on the front vinyl either but i kinda like it now with the Fly Eye on the fogs!

I still havn't fully decided yet but im thinking port and polished head, bigger inlet manifold and a re-map..?

Port and polished head will have a LOT less effect than a set of cams, and they are less effort to fit (although both involve a cambelt kit which isnt cheap on parts or labour)

I doubt you'll see 200brake from that fella. In my mind you'd likely need cams/bodies as well.

Over here its much the same apart from the fact that most people over here don't know what a 172 is ! i get an awful lot of honda looking to race .

Hopefully when im finished it will live up to the "sleeper" saying.

TBH, you probably need more like 300bhp than 200bhp for that to really be considered a sleeper.

But petty arguments over a term aside, I think its a lovely little car, although I would probably lose the tints personally.

Thinking about it now i would be dreaming for to get 200 just from that, looking at Cams and bodies what would you be talking bhp wise ? I know there is the option of a turbo but that in itself is a big job !

Generally speaking a healthy engine with a set of fairly agressive cams (you are limited by the pistons unless you change them) and a set of throttle bodies, will make around 210bhp.

Requires an aftermarket ECU as well, and new loom to suit, and then mapping etc.

Personally for similar money I would just turbo it instead and get far bigger gains.

Here is my sleeper clio:

Looks pretty standard.

But does this to an M3 on a racetrack:

Slower than Chip's I would imagine - but considerably faster than standard 182

Just shy of 300bhp atm

can i ask what has it pushing out so much power..? turbo?

Make sure if you are going to do it, that you sneak up on your wallet when its not looking, cause you are going to give it a RIGHT good kicking!

Cool looking car mate, cheapest way to make it a sleeper is to stick some DCi badges on the side ;)

It was the 90s when I built my first. 2.0 nova. That really does sound a long time ago.

Deffo you need to crack on with that striker.
