Finally got round to removing the carbon canister. I run the engine for a bit after and no lights came on so fingers crossed it won’t be a tit when I do actually drive it.

Prepped all callipers and repainted with 2 coats in pillar box red, cleaned and waxed plus new rear exhaust hangers to centralise the rear tail pipes, oh and new rear number plate light. Dog bone and engine mount upgraded as recommended.
Just ordered some new front grooved discs to go on plus the rears and a clutch when required.

Got to remember the age and mileage of thse cars nowadays, never going to be concourse without fresh paint so don't worry!

Indeed. We’ve had a few more modern cars through work the last couple of weeks that have failed MOT’s on rotten sills. One was quite a modern Polo which was a real surprise to see. I want to say it was a 2012 car (but could be wrong I’ll ask my work mate) I remember expressing my surprise as it looked pretty new and modern on top but it wasn’t the first he’d welded up he said.

Finally getting my act together and sorting the rear brakes; a bit of cleaning & paint, new disks, refurbished calipers, new pads, replacement brake pipes. Waiting on some replacement handbrake cables and the a quick bleed.

Once fronts have been done too, I'll do a full fluid change as well.

What did you use to blank off/vent the lines?
I left the lid attached to stop the light coming on and used the below on the tank line.

You shouldn't fit one of these.

You need a device that is two ways as it needs to allow air in when the fuel is depleting, but then you also need it to flow the other way when there is a fluctuation in temperature such as a hot summers day when the petrol will expand. If not you just have a big old highly flammable pressurised container in your car...

I recommend a 2 way valve made by Newton if you're going down this route.

The description says two way. Easy to test really, just try blowing and sucking through it.

Funny you should say that, my sons girlfriend has a polo around that age and the sills on it are shocking!

Dash removed. I think it’s officially a project now. Do I start a project thread? Would anyone be interested?

Swapped out failed windscreen motor. Gave the scuttle area & drains a clean out whilst it was off .

This morning I finished off the rear brake refurb with some nice new handbrake cables thanks to @renaultpartsdirect who got them to me pretty quickly given the challenging times were in.

Having dropped the exhaust slightly and removed the central heatshield it was all quite straight forward until I got a little distracted.

As it's off, maybe I should clean up the heatshield and 40 minutes later after some scouring pads and autosol it was very shiny. I was just starting to contemplate removing the others too for the same treatment when I took myself aside, gave me a slap and decided not to bother. It's ok, I'm feeling better now :p

Also, I've been slowly and carefully building up my tool collection and really like this little set from Wera. It's tiny but so useful especially for those hard to reach places. All the 1/4" bits you need, a magnetic bit holder, screwdriver handle and teeny 1/4" ratchet plus just the right set of sockets. It even comes with a belt pouch it you like that sort of thing.

The photo has a usual size 12mm/13mm ratchet spanner to give you a sense of the size.

I decided to have a look at repairing the bent sills at the jacking points.... it escalated quite quickly... I've managed to straighten them all up, removed all the surface rust and managed to get 2 coats of rust treatment on it.. Plan is to bolt a 1 inch metal box section to the inside to prevent future bends and add strength..
